About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

When the parents have to round them all up, is it a cygnet dragnet? 🙂

TD, there were actually four cygnets and the two parents. It is a little hard to tell as two cygnets are leaning into one another. I wish they had been closer and facing toward me, but I don’t usually see cygnets this tiny, so I took the photo anyway.

I counted six Ally and most people are seeing six – the two on the right are leaning close to one another. I wish they were paddling toward me and not far away, but I rarely, if ever, see cygnets this tiny while at this park, so I just took the photo.

That’s what I saw too Linda – the two on the right were kind of leaning into one another. They were paddling fast to keep up with their parents and it was windy and wavy too – probably tough on them as they were so young.

  9. looks like 6 if heads are an indication, Linda. Aren’t they loud too? Mute…hmmm.

That’s how many heads I counted too Terri. They were all kind of bunched together as it was windy and wavy and they were struggling to keep up with Mom and Dad. I wish they’d been closer to the shore, but I took the photo as I rarely see cygnets that small. I didn’t hear them making any noise. I like the soft little peeps and twitters you hear from the goslings if you are able to get close to them – they have their own language. 🙂

  10. I don’t think I have ever seen the babies between mom and dad, they always seem to be following them.

I know, that is usually how I see them too Diane. It was a very windy day and the water was quite wavy, so maybe that was why. There was a freighter way out on Lake Erie, but I wouldn’t think that caused the waves, but more the wind. They were so small and probably they worried they would lose them in the current. Once I wrote a post, ages ago, having seen and taken pictures at Elizabeth Park, where Mute Swan parents were paddling along and waves were high and they had one cygnet, not really small, but not too big either, but that baby kept going under the water – I thought it was going to drown and they weren’t even interested.

I think six little ones. They are so cute and when they are teenager age, they are so gangly!

That’s what I counted too Susan. A few were leaning into each other. It was windy and the waves were choppy, so they were bobbing around there, so it was difficult to tell. Yes, the goslings and cygnets grow up so quickly and get those big feet and canoe-shaped bodies, not as cute as here.

Thank you Ann Marie – I’m glad you liked it. They were so sweet all bunched up together like that. I wish they had been closer to Cove Point’s shoreline.

I lucked out with these Ruth! I rarely see cygnets to begin with, but these were so small and it was windy and wavy that day so those babies were bobbing up and down in the water trying to keep up with Mom and Dad (bringing up the rear).

Thank you Tom – that is what I saw as well. Glad you liked the photo! I usually don’t see the cygnets that young, so even though they had their backs to me, I still took the photo. They were tiny bobbing out in the water on a wavy and windy day.

      • They are such perfect parents! A species has some real intelligence when it diligently takes great care of its young. And if birds evolved from (and are) dinosaurs, that means that some dinosaur species were likely very caring parents too! (Fossil evidence is indicative of that.)

Tom, I just heard a story on the news this morning about how many birds are becoming extinct due to pollution and wildfire smoke and I thought about our recent comments. The offspring of the waterfowl are nurtured by their parents in such a tender way. I only have to look at their young ones and the gander or drake will stand closer to his brood and give me “the look” – I know they mean business. Swans I don’t see on land as much, especially with cygnets, but look here, all in a close-knit bunch. That’s amazing about the fossil evidence showing they are caring parents.

      • These wildfires and pollution issues are getting way out of hand. We sure need to do better as a species. The frequent wild, unnatural winds (too) are alarming.

I’ve never seen winds like this continually either Tom and I’ve not heard anything about the wildfires, either containment or level of pollution here, as the last few days the weather forecasts are about this severe weather we are having Wednesday afternoon/evening and has now taken precedence. I like the warm weather as opposed to the cold and snowy weather, but it also brings dangerous heat spikes and volatile weather like we will have Wednesday. It is not bad enough to have threats of tornadoes, flooding, high winds and hail, but the meteorologists I follow say it will be double the intensity of regular severe storm warnings … something to dwell on for the next 24 hours.
