About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Yes, just drop down, head under your wing and shut your eyes to the world around you. There was lots of other activity in the marsh, for example, the heron you just mentioned was squawking as he landed, then taking a spill!

Yes, so he needed to sleep it off! Kate, I went to a few places today as we have had great weather. I’m following up on our comments about the Lotuses. So, Lake Erie Metropark has almost no Lotuses and when I was there July 21st I saw there was hardly any leaves – same amount of leaves, zero flowers in both beds. The one bed was sparse as to leaves. It was terrible to see. I won’t write to this Metropark again as they didn’t answer me the first time and I didn’t see a park ranger to ask what happened.

Another place I went – Emily Frank Gardens, to take pics of sunflowers. You know the nice pool with the big Koi that reminds you of your pond – all the fish were gone! Instead they were overrun with lily pads – I’ve never seen so many, with one pond lily for all the lily pads. Two disappointments in two favorite places.

  9. Ahhhh, to be able to nap anywhere and at any time of the day (no need for a sleeping mask to keep the sun from shining in the eyes).

  10. Sweet to see. One wonders, though, is this behavior putting itself in jeopardy regarding being easy pickings for eagles? Sometimes, the more eyes that are looking about — or taking turns looking about — the better.

You’re right about that Tom. Usually, I see a group of Mallards sleeping and there is always a “lookout duck” – I wonder if this duck was sick? There was a lot of activity going on around it though – a Heron had just made a clumsy landing and ended up in the marsh with a splash and there were other ducks, but all in the water.

Me too Rebecca – I sometimes wonder how I used to get up at 4:00 a.m. to water the whole yard, weed and catch the bus at 7:30 a.m. and in the Winter shovel snow before I left on an even earlier bus in case one bus broke down in bad weather. Where is that young woman?
