BADGES

Ewwwww…I am NOT a fan of wasps of any sort, but the juxtaposition of ugly wasp and beautiful flower works well for photo composition!

Thank you Laurie! I’m no fan of wasps either and this one was huge and it seemed like its big body took up all the landscape of that Allium, which did offset that big wasp!

I kind of like the blue tint to its wings. Thank goodness it’s not aggressive to humans and helps to pollinate the flowers.

That blue tint was unique Barbara and to tell you the truth I didn’t notice it until the images were up on the screen. I took my photos and got away before something agitated it and it came after me! Good thing they are useful as pollinators.

We need pollinators!

Yes we do need pollinators and this big wasp does the work of many (even it is ugly!). The Allium plants were doing a great job attracting pollinators.

That’s a big one! Hope these photos were through a zoom lens 🙂

Yes, a big ugly wasp Dave, but I understand they are harmless. I had my digital compact camera and it zooms to 12X. It is ten years old this year and I come home with very few boo-boo shots when I use it, whereas the DSLR, I often can’t get close to something, like a butterfly or bug or birds if they are too close up, so often the photo is blurry.

Scary looking! 😬 Good thing they serve a purpose in nature.

Yes, they are scary, ugly-looking bugs Debbie. I couldn’t believe how huge this one was, almost covering the top of Allium, but it is a good pollinator.

Miss Linda……………………………………No thank you………………I’m glad so far I’ve never met up with a Back Digger Wasp!!!!!

Ann Marie, I wouldn’t want to meet up with a Black Digger Wasp either. That was the only one I saw that day, the rest were regular-sized bees and wasps (thankfully).

Great shots, Linda! Well, I’m not the only one to take wonderful photos of Digger Wasps! Teehee! 😊
You should do more close-up shots!

Thank you Tom! I knew you’d get a kick out of our identical Digger Wasps on Allium! They were so large and those incredible blue wings. I have a digital compact camera with 12X zoom and it is 10 years old. That camera is such a workhorse and, at least when I come home, after bending down close to take shots of the flowers and/or taking photos of bees or being able to take a panoramic shot, it seems this camera always gets it right!

Having been stung between the eyes by a wasp… I’m not a fan… but we need all the insects we can get… the flower wouldn’t be as lovely without it… so I’m conflicted! Well captured regardless, Linda !!

I can see why you would be conflicted Linda – all that beauty, but then being stung in that particular location could have been deadly. Thank you for your nice comment!

You’re so welcome! (I always knew they go for predators between the eyes, but I didn’t know I had any wasps in my garden until I was weeding one day…. I opened up the bushes to reach for the weed and in the split second it took for my brain to say ‘that looks like a wasp nest’ I was stung!)

That’s terrible and good thing you did not have an allergic reaction needing an Epi Pen because chances are you would not have had it on you, just out weeding in the garden. I hope that was a first and last time for that happening to you Linda.

Lovely blooms! You have to appreciate all the work the little insects do. 🙂

Those Alliums are so pretty Rebecca. I have seen a few of them in gardens, but not all grouped together like here. The bees, this wasp and tiny Skipper butterflies were going crazy for them!

I saw them at the farm last year but haven’t seen any this year.

Several years ago, there was small hole above the screen door and I saw some wasps going in and out and we sealed it up. I had one in the house last year. It must have come in on my hair or clothes and I was sitting at the table and saw it buzzing around the light. Thankfully I got it before it was “at large” in the house.

I can’t believe the wasp and bee are getting along!
