Yes, it was a hot day Ortensia, so a good time to cool off, even if you’re a deer. 🙂

Time for a swim!

Yes, no lotuses to eat, so just take a plunge to cool off instead!

I might have seen your deer. Others see 🦌 around here, but I often fail to see them.

I had the fun encounter with the deer in the Spring in the bushes, momentary as it was, then this deer in the marsh. That was it for 2025 – too bad about that. I was there yesterday and the waterfowl were scarce – not much water for them.

We have not seen many deer this year either – weird

We have deer that sometimes go out of the woods, onto the expressway and end up in the neighborhoods and not in rural areas either. In our Facebook City Residents Forum, I’ve seen several deer in the neighborhoods, one even a big buck which amazed me. There was a deer at Council Point Park last year – they do not live there and that was not the norm, but it was scared and saw a large area with water and some trees, so it ended up there.

It helps to have long legs in these situations.

Yes, it does Dave … you can tolerate the muck and mire of the marsh as long as it doesn’t touch the body!

I have heard of tip toe, but not dip doe. 🙂

Ha ha – yes, it did dip a hoof in the water and said “might as well cool off” so, the marsh was nice on a hot day, even if it had a lot of green stuff on top.

Glad you like it Susan. It was a hot day and I assume it was taking a cool dip since there were no lotuses there to munch on. 🙂

Miss Linda…………………………..I didn’t realize that deer went that deep to drink water……………………………it sure must be cold water………………………………

Ann Marie – I have only seen the deer in the marsh at Lake Erie Metropark when they are eating the lotuses, but there were no big lotuses there that day, so I have to assume it was cooling off as it was a hot day. I was at Dingell Park once and a man there said he saw several bucks swimming from Mud Island over to the pavilion area – he said all you could see were their heads with the big antlers. I found that hard to believe, so that night when I got on the computer, I Googled and yes, deer are very good swimmers. Who knew?

Nice picture, Linda. Was this a very hot day? I’ve not seen a deer wading in the water like that.

Thank you Ruth. Yes, it was a hot day and there were two deer wading, so I took a photo, but they were far away so the picture wasn’t good, but then when I walked back the second time, this deer was closer. I usually only see the deer in the marsh at Lake Erie Metropark when they are eating the lotuses, but there were no big lotuses there that day, so I have to assume it was cooling off as it was hot – it was on July 21st, so no lotuses to eat that early. Down at Dingell Park in Ecorse, there is a small uninhabited island called “Mud Island” and once I was talking to a fisherman there who said he saw several bucks swimming from Mud Island over to the pavilion area where we were standing. He said all you could see were their heads with the big antlers. He told me snakes and deer live on the island and probably coyotes too. I found that hard to believe about the deer swimming, so that night when I got on the computer, I Googled and yes, deer are very good swimmers.

Very cool! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a deer wading in the water. You were there at just the right time!

Yes, I only see them wading in the water when they are eating lotus leaves, but there were really no lotuses on that day as it was just July and there were not many this Summer. My timing was great Laurie! 🙂

Thank you Rebecca – the deer found a perfect way to cool off and I was lucky enough to see it.

How cute! When the drainage easement on our property floods due to heavy rain, the deer come out and splash in the water. It’s fun to watch.

I was fun seeing this deer on a hot day. That would be fun to watch. Years ago, I was at this same park and all of a sudden I saw a fawn and its mother as I was driving out of the park. I pulled into a lot and got out quietly. The mother left a few minutes later to go for a swim. I didn’t know deer swam until I saw it with my own eyes. She jumped into the water with a big splash and just left her baby behind with me! I was very close to it, taking pictures and speaking softly and it just grazed and looked at me every so often. Mama came back a while later, stood a few paces away and the fawn reluctantly left, though it kept looking back at me until it finally trotted off after its mother. My best wildlife experience ever.

Oh, what a wonderful experience! I was surprised to learn that deer are apparently strong swimmers. (I wouldn’t think those long, skinny legs were very effective.)

I’ll send the link in a separate comment. It was a Wordless Wednesday, so pics only, but it was my best wildlife experience to date. That fawn was so sweet. I wonder if deer are good swimmers as they go into the water to escape their predators, including hunters?

I hadn’t considered that, but you’re probably right.

Linda, here is my sweet little fawn – no pics of Mom as she wasn’t around long enough to take her picture.

Such a cutie! S/he wasn’t the least bit bothered by your presence.

Yes, s/he was and the fact that it wasn’t the least bit bothered by me made the experience even better. That last look back at me … you’d think I gave him/her a handful of carrots, instead of just taking pictures and giving some sweet talkin’. 🙂

Thank you Debbie! Yes, deer like to go into the water, sometimes to eat the lotus leaves and sometimes just to cool off like on this day. I learned that deer liked the water and knew how to swim when I was at this park one time and driving out of the park when I saw a fawn and its mom. I pulled into a nearby parking lot (lucky for me as you can’t stop on the road) and got out of the car quietly. Not long afterward the Mom went to the marsh, jumped in with a splash and begin swimming. I was gobsmacked seeing that and because she left her little one standing near me. I took lots of photos of the fawn and when she came to collect it, it kept looking back at me as it trotted away. My best wildlife experience ever.

Thank you Debbie! I floated home that day – the whole “meet-up” was a little surreal, with the mother leaving her fawn behind and it seemed sad to leave and looking back at me … that doesn’t happen as they bolt 99% of the time. 🙂

Thank you Yvette! There were two deer originally, but I didn’t use the photo since the two were not close enough for a good picture of them.
