About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Thanks Debbie! It gets harder and harder to get up as early as I once did, even more so once Winter (or this Winter-like stuff we are dealing with) arrives! It was a “real feel” of 0F (-17 C) and it’s snowing again!

  5. Nice close up pictures Linda! It looks like she wants to go back to sleep in the last picture.

Thanks Diane! I think she reluctantly popped her head up to take a look and what she saw wasn’t so interesting, so yes, she went back to sleep after I took the second shot. I was going to put a third picture there of her napping again and figured it looked identical to the first shot. 🙂

It’s a COLD Winter Wet Wordless Wednesday here, Linda. Perhaps this duck was dreading what was to come.

It’s very dreary here too TD. It was a “real feel” of 0 degrees when I got up this morning and it’s very windy and snowing again. I dread to think what the weather will be come “real Winter”.

Yes, it is Janis. After a beautiful Fall, we are suddenly in this snowy, very windy, bitterly cold weather pattern which has not been kind to my walking regimen at all, so it makes getting up even tougher. I think you ought to negotiate on that little nicety … maybe a New Year’s resolution?

  13. Great pics, Linda! My morning routine is to wake up, look around, and go back to sleep.
Cool that there were duck-like birds way back in the Cretaceous period.

Thanks Tom! She was apparently comfortable with me as she put her head back under her wing after I took the second picture. I didn’t even have to bribe her with a treat! This horribly cold, snowy and icy weather makes you want to crawl right back under the covers. It’s too early for this wintry mess. We’re retired now … we had many years of being up at the crack of dawn to go to work and now we get a break!

Ugh winter! Is it as cold there as here? We broke a record last night -18.3 Celsius, it was sooo cold! and no better today. I really want spring to come and I bet that duck does too lol

Yes, this wintry blast continues here too. But you guys were colder than us. We were 5F (-15C) and it broke the old record from 1974. Plus, we have snow almost every day starting Sunday morning through next Saturday! That poor duck. I feel sorry for them in the Winter. I was at Heritage Park (where this photo was taken) once on a bitter cold day. There are lots of ducks here at this park and they were all huddled together in a line on the ice near the covered bridge. It made an interesting photo but they looked so miserable.

It’s funny why they don’t fly down south and get warm. If I could, I would lol We are supposed to get snow today too. We hardly have any on the ground right now and I hope it stays that way!!

Our Robins hang around all Winter now, so there goes the happiness of seeing the first Robin in Spring … now (for me) it is seeing the first Red-winged Blackbird at the Park or a marsh. We are getting 1-2 more inches of snow tonight into Sunday morning. I am already done with this fake Winter and snow!

I read a meme today, The thing I like best about winter is……………..When it’s over !! lol that is me to a tee. It’s snowing here too Linda but at least it has warmed up to -4 Celsius! Yes I agree about the robins, it used to be the first sign of spring and was exciting when you saw one.

That meme suits me to a tee too Susan! We had about three inches of wet, heavy snow last night and some melted with the sun, but then we are in the deep freeze again tonight (real feel of 0 degrees around midnight). We’re not getting warmer until near Christmas. Too late now by then for me to recoup my miles and with the refreeze overnight, tomorrow is a “no walk” day then two days of snow. Ugh!

Your weather sounds so much like our weather. We had a LOT of snow yesterday but today is just plain cold. We are supposed to get another big dump or blizzard on Wednesday. The thing I like best about winter is when it’s over lol

Today was back in the deep freeze for us and more snow overnight, freezing rain by mid-day and some wintry mix on Wednesday morning. I have to remember that line and use it sometime because it is so true, especially already with this faux Winter we have now. I remember once, years ago, we had Winter-like weather started in late November and it seemed I was out there daily shoveling every day for months before I left for work. It was a very bad Winter. I took the bus to work in Downtown Detroit and just had a short walk to get to the bus stop, but I took one bus earlier than I’d need to as buses ran late in Winter, so I wonder now how I did it … it wears me out thinking about it!

It started snowing yesterday afternoon and it’s still snowing. We’ve got quite a lot of snow and all the schools were closed and a lot of things were canceled today. I hope it stops. I have to take my car in for an appointment early tomorrow morning.☹️

Ugh – it sounds like our weather. Parts of the area here got six inches (15 cm.) of snow early this morning – we were on the light side with three inches of snow, but it was mixed with rain, but then we got regular rain. Everything has already iced up from the melting ice/snow and is causing accidents. It WOULD just have to be a day you have to go somewhere – good luck with that drive Susan. I had an allergy shots appointment this morning but I cancelled it as I knew it would be crummy this morning. It’s just shots from the nurse, so I’ll have to go another time.
