About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Thanks Kate! I’ll have a couple more shots of it and a tale about the encounter in a blog post down the road. There was a couple walking ahead of me on the trail. They turned around and the woman pointed to the woods without speaking, so I wouldn’t miss this doe. I caught up with them later, a very nice couple and we chatted for a while. He takes photos of wildlife and she paints from his photos.

  6. Well, Linda, i don’t think that deer are turning into carnivores that look at us like something tasty to eat. That would be a twist, wouldn’t it? Then the hunters would be the hunted. Then the tables would be turned, and people would run in fear.

I don’t think so either Tom, but I admit I was fascinated by the deer sticking its tongue out at me – it wasn’t eating as I got a few shots before this last one, which I’ll save for one of my longer Sunday posts. There were two kind people, a man and a woman, ahead of me on this trail and they stopped in their tracks – the woman turned around and looked at me, pointed at the trees and went “shhh” … that was nice of them, as I wouldn’t have seen the doe as I was looking ahead on the path for snakes. We’ve had two Mississauga Rattlesnakes in Michigan lately – one was in someone’s goat at a park boat launch and the other was on a trail at a metropark and bit a young girl.

  8. So cute, Linda, sorry I missed this! Our local deer have been nosing around now. Must be the time of year…for deer 🙂

I thought she was cute too Terri! There was a couple in front of me on the trail and the woman turned around and motioned for me to look where she was pointing and there was this doe in the woods. I got a few more shots of her which I’ll use in that day’s walk post, but I was grateful they did that as I’d likely have missed it. They were nice – I caught up later and we chatted; he takes pictures and she paints what he photographs. 🙂

Thanks Susan! Ahead of me on the trail was a man and woman and they stopped and she pointed to the woodsy area, so I caught up to them and got a few shots of this doe. I saved the other shots, not as cute (and not sticking out her tongue at me), for the bigger post from that day’s walk. They were nice … he takes wildlife photos and she paints his photos.

Oh that’s awesome! I have had a couple of people want to paint my photographs, I love it when they do that. My only thing is they have to show me it when it’s done!

I would want to see the finished painting too. The funny thing was when we were chatting, she mentioned her and her husband saw a Mama Canada Goose and her very small goslings were tucked under her wings as it was chilly out that day. So, her husband took that photo and she painted it. I told her I was walking in Trenton looking at this year’s murals and I passed an art store and saw a similar painting in the window and took a photo of it. I told her I took a few painting courses and am still starting out, but I thought I’d try painting it. So, she said “that’s my painting in the window!” Sure enough, when I got home, I looked and yes it saw “Dawn” in the corner. So, when I do the post, I’m going to include our conversation and show the painting which was very sweet.

Esther, it was looking at me so intently and then suddenly it said “nope, that’s human” and it loped off. But it was a pretty intense stare-off there for a minute. 🙂

      • I’m glad it stayed a while for you to take its pic!! You are very quick to snap a shot with these animals when they are perched so calmly. I try but they scamper off before I’m ready.

It always amazes me how the deer, on the rare occasions I get to see and photograph them, stare and stare, as if mesmerized by humans. The encounter I had at Fair Lane earlier this year, where the buck and doe just kept watching me was incredible. They realized I wouldn’t hurt them and surely they saw humans all the time … this was right on U of M’s Dearborn campus for goodness sake.
