It was a warmish morning and I opted to do a quick round-trip walk to the Wyandotte border instead of the Park.  I soon realized I was overdressed, especially since I was walking rather quickly since storms were predicted and I didn’t want to get caught in a quick downpour.

As I neared the bridge over the Ecorse Creek that separates Lincoln Park from Wyandotte, I happened upon a whole lot of honking – that would be honking of the goose and automobile variety.  I looked ahead down the road to see what was happening, almost afraid that a car had hit a goose and it was in pain, because I knew I would be sorry I’d seen that scene as I’d be upset by it.

But, it was not an accident at all.  No, there was a pair of Canada Geese ambling across the road, perfecting their strut, in front of a vehicle.  Back and forth they went, pacing like a pair of sentries and holding up a car, whose driver could, but would not, swerve to go around them.  The woman inside, clearly frustrated, was jamming down on her horn and gesturing at the geese.  I could see her mouth moving, but the windows weren’t down so I had no idea what she was saying;  I could probably guess though.

The geese responded to her honking with some of their own honking and then a little wing-flapping for added emphasis.  The exasperated motorist tooted the horn a few more times, but they staunchly held their ground, and just continued blocking her way.  Perhaps she should have grabbed something soft, exited the vehicle and gone over and “goosed” them, i.e. given them a gentle poke to prod them along.  Finally, the driver must have looked at the time, because she laid on the horn continually with a deafening noise, and the geese finally got the hint and took flight into the morning sky and the woman sped off, lest they circle around and confront her again.

It seems the traffic rules as they apply to Canada Geese sometimes are a little loosey-goosey.
