Thank you Anne – he sure is beautiful. I am sure he is the same woodpecker I featured in the Winter against the blue sky sitting on the decimated tree. That’s where I used to see him before this Safe Haven tree.

Yes, he sure is CloverandIvy. The female looks similar only just red coloring at the nape of the neck, not on the top like a “cap” … thank you; I was standing pretty close to this woodpecker both time, so it was two lucky shots!

We have the cute little Downies at this Park too, not on a regular basis and they are so small, they don’t show up. I would love to see one of those Pileated woodpeckers. They have them in Michigan, but I’ve not seen one yet. I am hopeful – I’ll put it on my “2021 Birdie Bucket List”. 🙂

I’ve seen pileated woodpeckers three times, and yes, they are deserving of anyone’s bucket list.

You’re lucky to have seen them – they sure are colorful. I follow a woman photographer on Twitter. She goes to a large Metropark every morning and feeds the birds from the palm of her hand and videos it with her phone. She has the Red-Bellied Woodpeckers come to perch on her hand to eat seeds and suet tidbits. Even the Jays and Red-Winged Blackbirds take food from her hand plus a lot of small birds as well. Beautiful still shots too. Here is her site if you are on Twitter, also her website and Facebook site to take a peek. It looks like everything on Twitter is on the Facebook site. Today she posted a Red-Bellied Woodpecker on her hand eating. Her videos are in slow motion so you can really enjoy the birds up close.

I know Andy – the coloring on this woodpecker is amazing. The female is similar, just no red “cap”, just the red nape of the neck. I’ve gotten close-ups as the woodpecker is going to the tree to get peanuts. I was pretty close to him on the path here – lucky for me!

I thought I heard Rex on my run today. I stopped and looked for him but never found him. He IS a handsome guy!

Yes, look at that bright red head! I am sure he is the only male Red-Bellied Woodpecker at this park and the same one I featured in a post with the bright-blue sky and sitting on the tree he has decimated. I hear him most mornings on my walk – now he has a new place to go as he likes whole peanuts. The first picture was taken on the tree trunk under the Safe Haven Tree. I thought Rex was a fancy name for such a fancy-looking bird. 🙂

The male has a full red “cap” and red nape of the neck; the female just has the red nape. They both have the B&W checkered feathers.
I had looked on a bird I.D. site when I first saw him in the Spring. This post from April, about 1/3 of the way down had me sleuthing, I think he is gorgeous with that red plumage:

yep,the male has red around it’s bill and more on red on the head.

I think they are vibrant looking. Their song/noises is not so nice, but they are not known for being songbirds. The red head sure stands out in this drab landscape we have now.

Yes, the first time I heard it I thought what was that? They’re pretty loud and especially now when bare trees. I hear them in the neighborhoods sometimes, drilling away on trees or telephone poles!
