Great photos of the wood duck. I like how you captured its reflection and I wondered if it was moving around to see itself? Now I wonder if I’ve ever seen a wood duck and didn’t realize it was one? Love the clever title you came up with too, Linda! 😍

Thank you Shelley! I was lucky to get those reflections because it kept going in and out of the mucky area and then I didn’t have a complete reflection – it was cut off. That’s a good question if it could see itself? I didn’t know so I Googled and no, they don’t know it is themselves – they think it could be another duck. Only Magpies “get” it and realize it is themself peering back. This time I could see it was a Wood Duck as soon as I saw the ring around the eye. But the other times, I never realized they were Wood Ducks as they were smaller and under and between the Lotus leaves. I think this was a juvenile – the females have the feathers at the ruff of the neck and this one doesn’t. Glad you like my title too – a Dr. Seuss wannabee – that is me!

You’re welcome. Thanks for doing the research. I can see that now in the photos.
Dr. Seuss wannabee is a fun approach to pursue! 😉

You’re welcome!
I always liked Dr. Seuss and his mindset. My favorite quote of his applies to me:
“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.” Dr Seuss

I LOVE that quote too and it does fit you!! 🥰

Thank you Shelley – my motto in life. 🙂 Once you’re out of your teens where you had to think/act, even breathe like the rest of the crowd, it’s time to be a free spirit. Dr. Seuss had a lot of profound quotes and sadly most people just associate him with his witty rhyming books and crazy characters.

Yes, so true, Linda. You have many hints of his cleverness in your writings too!

Thank you Shelley! He was quite eccentric and perhaps that is why he had such interesting characters in his books. The first book I read by Dr. Seuss was “The Cat in the Hat”.

You’re welcome! Yes, that was a first read for me too. I still have a copy of the one I bought for our kids. Classic!

Thank you Brian. I’m a sucker for those reflections too. I’ve been looking for adult Wood Ducks for awhile now. They’re on my annual “Birdie Bucket List” – at least I found a juvenile and in the Summer I got some ducklings – no parents pictures yet though. .

Keep on looking or maybe not look and that way you will see one 😂

That’s when I have had a few lucky finds, when I least expected them. Once a doe and her fawn were grazing and I drove by, saw them, parked very quickly and walked over near them. Mom literally ditched the fawn and went for a swim in the marsh. I was in disbelief – it just stood and stared at me, nibbled some grass, stared at me some more. I had my digital compact camera and was about 8-10 feet away. When Mom was done with her swim, she appeared on the shoreline and the fawn trotted off toward her, but looked back at me a few times. I thought my heart would melt.

A duck in the muck but was he stuck? (Ok I ran out of rhymes!)

Nope, it just looked like it Kate. It’s not like he can cluck if he’s stuck to get help. 🙂

Thank you Wayne – this time I recognized it in “real time” and not waiting until I got home at the computer because they were swimming around the Lotus leaves. That eye ring gave it away!

one step each time and you’ll soon be a fully fledged birder!

Yes, that kind of happened along the way didn’t it Wayne. The squirrels are demanding equal time, so I have to sneak in a post or two featuring them. Otherwise they nip at my ankles when they see me. 🙂

Yes, those rings around the eyes are awesome aren’t they Barbara? At least I recognized the Wood Duck at the marsh instead of on the computer screen weeks later.

Yes, I think they are oblivious to it Ann Marie, unlike us humans who notice it right away!

They are very pretty little ducks. I don’t usually see these swimming where I can get a photo.

That’s the closest yet I’ve been able to get to these Wood Ducks Rebecca. I am hoping one day to see a male Wood Duck with its amazing color combo. I’ve gone from ducklings to juveniles, so maybe next year?

I took a photo of a male and female swimming among the reeds at the lake once, but they were moving along quickly and were too far away, and the photo came out all blurry. The male is quite beautiful. I guess we both have him on our photo list. 🙂

Yes, they are beautiful, just like those Mandarin Ducks, which also have such striking plumage. I think Andy Finnegan has shown us a few that strayed to Titchfield Haven. They will be bucket photo list perennials for us. 🙂

Thanks Susan! First I never saw Wood Ducks, now I’ve seen ducklings twice and this juvenile – now aiming for the male with its beautiful colors … some day. 🙂 It was cute with those eye rings, wasn’t it?

Yes he was cute. I do like ducks, especially the Wood Ducks and Mergansers.

A Wood Duck male remains on my “Birdie Bucket List” and I went to a wooded area where there are a mated pair nesting in the trees there, but I saw nothing. And I would love to see a Merganser. We have them here as I follow a site on Facebook where photographers post pics from various Michigan Metroparks in SE Michigan (we have 13 of them) so one day perhaps I’ll see one.

We do see a lot of mergansers in Algonquin Park! and sometimes around our area where I live. They are so cute

“How much wood can a wood duck duck if a wood duck could duck wood…?” Or something like that 🙂 And yes, I checked all the comments to be sure someone else didn’t revisit this one too.

No, no one said that Dave and why didn’t I think of it? I hesitated as I already had Mallard ducklings and their mom swimming in the brown muck, but this was a close-up, so I went with it!
