BADGES

Congratulations!!! He’s a beauty! I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before. Was there a female nearby?

Thanks Barbara! The male Wood Duck has been on my list forever. I was surprised the photo came out as clear as it did – I wasn’t that close to it and it kept moving around.. No, it was by itself. I have seen female Wood Ducks with ducklings nearly every time I go to Lake Erie Metropark, but never with a male Wood Duck nearby. The females and ducklings blend right into the water and sometimes scum on the surface so they’re difficult to see.

I used to see wood ducks in NY. They are striking birds.

Yes, their colors are so vibrant. I was happy to finally see a male; I’ve been seeing females with ducklings, but they blend right into the water in the marshy areas.

Yes, very beautiful Janis. I have been hoping to see and photograph one for a while now. Thank you! Now if I can find those elusive fawns, I’ll be even happier!

Much prettier than the Australasian Wood Ducks

I knew you’d be amazed at the difference Brian. The females have brown plumage, a grayish-brown head and white eye ring. They nest in trees as well as on land.

Thank you! Yes, the males are very beautiful TD. Too bad I wasn’t a little closer to photograph it colorful head head on, not just in profile. I would love to see the whole family together one day!

Yes, so pretty and vibrant Susan. I wish it had been a wee bit closer, but I was excited to see it (first time ever) and take a photo of it. I have been seeing more female Wood Ducks with ducklings, but they blend right into the water with its scummy surface and reeds.

A super handsome species! I feed ducks sunflower seeds in the shell. They are super healthy and they float! 😉

Hi Tom – I’m very sorry your comment went to SPAM. I should have looked as I saw you had “liked” my Wood Duck post. I have to go through a whole rigamarole for comments/notifications as I’m still using a Windows 7 laptop. Anyway, I apologize. I have wanted to find and photograph a male Wood Duck for a long time. What type of sunflower seeds float – the black oilers or the striped seeds? I used black oilers for my squirrels and birds at Council Point Park. Our ducks are MIA for now – mostly due to the Park destruction, but they are with the geese down at the Detroit River awaiting their flight feathers, so they all hang out there in the water.

Yes, I was very lucky Sandra – it was across the marsh from me. I hoped it would paddle closer to me, but I was excited to see it and its beautiful coloring.

It is always nice when you see something new on your birding list. They are not native birds here but the odd escapee turns up from time to time.

Yes, very exciting … I waited a long time to see this beauty. I hope I get to see a Mandarin Duck one time. I know you featured one on your blog Andy and I think you said it was not a regular visitor to your area either.
