About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

  1. I never saw a barn swallow close up, only swooping in the sky. Your photos are great.

Thank you Anne. I used to be able to photograph them up close when they sat on a dead tree in the same marsh, but this was just a stroke of luck. A big Phragmities reed and a hot day and he/she needed a break so it perched there.

They are very pretty birds Brian and always on the move. Luckily this one perched on the Phragmites reed long enough to get a close-up of him. The males are more vibrant than the females and have longer tails.

These birds are new to me in the sense of having never seen them [to my knowledge].

Or they flit by you so close you might not notice them Ally. They are mostly at marshy areas or parks where they can build nests under wood structures like an overlook or in the roof of a covered bridge. They swoop and dive for insects, always in motion. Luckily it was a hot day and this one took a break by sitting on this Phragmities reed, so I swooped in for some shots.

  6. Dazzling pictures! Love that cobalt blue/rusty orange contrast. It’s so rare to see them perched and resting like that.

I’m glad you liked the pictures Barbara! They are vibrant-looking birds with their coloring, but always in motion as you know. I was lucky this one got tired of swooping and diving for insects and went to rest on this Phragmites reed, so I got as close as I could without spooking it.

Barn swallows are the prettiest swallows (in my opinion). You did a great job of capturing them in photos.

I agree Laurie. They are the prettiest swallows with that cobalt blue that is iridescent on a sunny day. I was lucky to get these photos as they don’t perch very often. It was a hot and humid day and he was taking a break on this Phragmities reed, so I got these shots.

Linda, I think that the barn swallow wanted you to show off its fall fashion statement! 🍂I splurged treating myself with pumpkin swirl cheesecake to bring in this fall season.

TD, I was pleased that barn swallow sat on the Phragmites as long as it did and wasn’t spooked because they are always in flight, swooping and diving to catch insects and they spook easily. The pumpkin swirl cheesecake sounds wonderful – perfect to bring in the fall season. Hope it didn’t melt bringing it home! That would be the case here with another day in the 80s, such un-fall-like weather!

Ha, ha, ha, no the cheesecake didn’t melt! It is 88 degrees here right now. My mower man took care of the grass today and the oak leaves are beginning to fall more. He doesn’t rake leaves. So I will have to do that myself. I plan to freeze the cheesecake in single servings. One bag of leaves rewards one slice of cheesecake that should last me all fall season!

Do you have a special treat that you like this time of year?

I pictured you having cheesecake swirling in a pool from the heat. Glad it made it home safely. I think that is a special reward for raking a bag of leaves, a great trade-off in my opinion. I do like to have cider and a couple of cake donuts at least once each Fall season. I went grocery shopping yesterday and treated myself. I also like the sweet coffees to have on hand for colder months, just as a treat.

Cake donuts and cider for the fall sounds good! I’m happy to hear that you treated yourself too!

Yes, once a season I have my seasonal treats. I have found these nice soft granola bars and they make them in pumpkin but I think they’re only available online still. Nature’s Best make wonderful treats made from dates and figs. So I indulge myself if I walk a lot of miles that day, or get something accomplished outside or inside that I am not fond of doing.

It’s hard to make out their coloring when they are flying and swooping like they normally do. I’ve only seen one still once when a pair was checking out one of our life rings for a nesting spot. You got some great shots!

Thank you Debbie – they are beautiful to see up close with their vibrant plumage. Usually they are busy diving and swooping for insects and never perch – it was hot and humid that day so I guess they were worn out, this one in particular!

  12. Great photos of Barn Swallows, Linda! I haven’t seen Barn Swallows around my property like I used to years ago. They used to nest under the nearby bridge. However, now they are gone. I used to love to watch them adroitly fly through the skies!

Thank you Tom! I was fairly close to them and usually they never even stop to catch their breath. It is amazing to watch them catching insects in mid-air. This is near a wooden overlook so I’m sure they have nests under the overlook. Their nests that I see under the covered bridge at Heritage Park are amazing.

This one’s blue head is striking, especially coupled with the beige ruffles of the underbelly. The fourth photo somehow looks like a pouting lower lip. What did you say to make him/her make that face? 🙂

I think they are very attractive birds Dave and funny you mention the fourth photo because I thought that bird looked really angry too! You are the only person who noticed how it was glaring at me! I guess I pushed the envelope on how many shots I could take because it turned its back on me then and flew away!

Thank you Diane! It is rare when barn swallows perch – they are always swooping and diving for insects. It was hot day and as I was standing on the overlook, I saw this one taking a breather on the Phragmites reed, so I was lucky to get a few shots.

Thank you and I agree with you Zazzy – their colors are so vibrant and their cobalt blue plumage reminds me of how Starling’s feathers catch the light just right and they look almost multi-colored. 🙂
