About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

They do, don’t they Anne? I guess all the plant life in the marsh. They are molting so they are not their usual vibrant-looking selves. If they are smart, they stay here at Lake Erie Metropark because five miles down the road at Pointe Mouilee, it is duck hunting season.

Thank you Wayne! I like this small area of the marsh with a big log as the ducks like to sit there. These two I’m sure are mates as they always sit close to one another, even if the others depart. Poor ducks are molting – in pictures #4 and #5, you can see the male had a feather on his bill. The Lotus leaves are large here, so shiny there was a reflection on one of them … they had not bloomed yet and the leaves are as big as a dinner plate when they bloom.

      • you have come a long way Linda. You are doing what I call “becoming intimate with your backyard”!
You know where to go and who may be hanging around there.
Many pro photographers come here but because I know where to go, they do not get shots like mine.
Knowing the addresses are very important!

Thank you Wayne! I’ve got a few more fun shots to share of this couple from other trips in future Wordless Wednesday posts. The great thing is they stay there on the log, just looking at me – no fear, so I guess they realized I’m no threat. Either that, or they are so worn out from molting, they think “oh, it’s her again – just look cute, she’ll take a few shots, then go away ’til next time!”

Thank you Terri. These two, which I think are a pair as they stay close to one another, always hang out on this big log. I think they like posing as they never go into the water like most ducks do when a human shows up.

Thank you Rebecca! I always go to this area of Lake Erie Metropark, a little nook in the marsh with a big log – the Mallards like sitting there and I often see this pair. I think it is “their log” and they don’t seem to get spooked by me and paddle away like most ducks.

Thank you Ann Marie – I’m glad the ducks pose so nicely and don’t require treats for poses like my furry friends do. These two ducks were along the Cherry Island Trail and I think it is “their log” as I often see them there.

Thank you Esther! I love alliteration. 🙂 They sure do look plump. Those two I believe are a pair as I often see them sitting on that log as I pass. The American Lotuses were about to bloom and the leaves are huge, so they were likely feasting on those huge leaves you see around them. I have to laugh as the deer walk into the marsh and eat the Lotuses too – leaves, blooms, but we humans are forbidden by law to pick and take any part of these protected plants.

  14. Beautiful ducks, Linda! Great shots! I love ducks because they are beautiful and smart. I’m not so fond of duck hunters, because they are ugly and not so smart.

Thank you Tom – I think ducks are beautiful and peaceful when they perch or even line up on a log like that. I’m glad the ducks at Lake Erie Metropark stay in place, because five miles down the road, duck hunting is allowed beginning September 1st. I just read a news article that all the migrating birds who might have migrated along the eastern seaboard totally avoided Hurricane Helene. They stayed put or chose another route. The site “Birdcast” showed a comparison of a migration map from September 20th versus a migration map for September 25th. Birds should take offense to the phrase “birdbrain”!
