About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Yes, they’re very beautiful when in bloom or even about to bloom. I wonder how all the heat affected them this year? In the Winter, the stalks and seed pods look like periscopes coming out of the water/ice which is an interesting look.

  9. Once I was so determined to get a close up of some water lilies that I waded in with chest waders. Very muddy bottom.

    Great shots Linda!

  12. Lotus Blossoms bring that kind of beauty that is magical. Thoreau must have been very appreciative of them. 😊

I’m glad you liked these photos Janis. I was trying for a variety of stages of lotus blooms. Yes, they have a faint fragrance, which to me is subtle, like honeysuckle, especially when it is morning and it’s hot and humid. They close up at night and open in the early morning. This is the closest I am able to access the Lotuses as the other beds are too far away to smell.

Very nice Linda! I think they can be quite expensive, according to my neighbour, who will drive miles to pick up a single plant from someone for his fish pond. He had 3 in bloom this year, all pale pink.

Thank you Joni! Yes, they are beautiful and these, if you pick ’em you would get fined, even if the blooms are off and they are reduced to sticks with seed pods. They are considered protective plants, but … unbelievably, they are considered invasive as well.

  18. I love these plants Linda and I even sunk them in pots in my ponds when I had them. They are expensive as Joni said. I also floated hyacinths and they cost $1.00 a piece. I would buy 10 for each pond and by the end of summer I was throwing them away by the handful so I had a hole to feed the fish. I just watched a nature show about them being invasive, they spread like crazy!

I love them too Diane! They look like they would be very delicate and hard to grow, but they are hardy as you know if you had to get rid of them; look how they come back every Spring and if you go to areas where they have the Lotuses, in the Winter if the water is frozen over, the Lotus leaves are gone and all that is left is a stick in the ice with a seed pod on them. I know you can buy the seed pods at Michael’s Craft Stores, but they are decorative only. I have heard they are invasive, which seems contrary to the fact that they are protected plants and you get fined if you pick them. But the deer and muskrat eat the leaves – maybe they spit out the bloom! 🙂

Glad you like them Esther! I bought the book “Walking” by Thoreau a few years ago – maybe this year I can get it read – it is only about 50 pages long. I’ve not read anything by him before, but like his quotes.

They are so pretty and I’m glad I saw them here as the lotus beds at Lake Erie Metropark did not produce this year. I was there last week and it was a disappointment to see just some leaves but zero blooms at peak blooming time, so I’m glad I got to see these at the DNR Headquarters.
