About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

  1. Black and white photos?

Yes, I was trying to show “the olden days” (when I was young). When I was going to see Santa, it was back when it was black-and-white photos. I guess I should have included the black-and-white photo of me sitting in his chair at the department store, waiting for him to return from his break.

Yes, a long time ago Barbara – it was fun waiting for Santa and I have a B&W photo of me sitting in Santa’s chair as I was waiting for him to return from his break. Now you can make a reservation for your Santa visit, but I think you wouldn’t have as much excitement building as the line snaked around Toyland at the Department store and you mentally added more to your “wish list”. This was a storefront window in Downtown Trenton. The main street shops were already decorating for Christmas when I was there in November.

  2. This makes me want to take a picture with Santa! This month is going fast…I need to slow down and enjoy it. Next week is the last week of homeschooling. So excited to call it a wrap for this semester.

I’m sure you and the kids can hardly wait … do they have exams next week too? I hope everything goes smoothly and you get a nice long break.

Yes, it is tempting to want to visit Santa isn’t it? I turned the second picture into a black-and-white photo as the last time I saw Santa and sat on his lap, it was definitely the black-and-white era for photography!

Thanks Joni – I was waiting for Santa in the black-and-white era (judging from most of the photos in the photo album) … same for you since we are the same age. I remember going to Eaton’s or Simpsons and seeing Santa and the line went through Toyland so you saw toys and animated displays. It was fun. Now yuo can make a reservation and bypass all that … straight to Santa.

I don’t remember going ever going to see Santa when I was a kid. Once when I was 10 and way too old my dad made me go with my little brother – Santa was at the union hall, handing out silver centennial coins and he thought we should have one. I still have it!

I forgot that you were not really near any big malls like Downtown Toronto – did you go when you were attending college in Toronto? For the ambiance, not the Santa visit. 🙂 I am glad you got to collect one of those centennial coins and saved it. We had bicentennial quarters in 1976 for the bicentennial year. Each state in the union had their own quarter and you could buy a cardboard frame which kept all the quarters from all 50 states lined up alphabetically and you put the coin in the slot. I never collected all of the 50 coins but I was still working at the diner, so I had plenty of opportunities to watch out for them as I also took cash for their bills at the register.

We didn’t even have a mall period until early 1970’s and then it was a small one, and by then I was way too old for Santa. No, I never went Christmas window shopping in downtown Toronto, as we were always in the middle of exams by then…..and broke anyway. My room-mate and I used to go to the big Eatons Dept. store downtown in the fall and look at plaid Viyella housecoats (high quality designer brand) and dream of the day when we could afford one! I bought a cheaper Sears tartan red plaid one for the dorm, because you needed something to go to the communal washroom down the hall.

When we moved from Toronto to Oakville when I was two years old, there was no shopping center near us, so you had to go into Downtown Oakville. They got the Hopedale Mall in Oakville, before we moved here – too bad as it was close by and had a grocery store too. I just Googled Viyella housecoats – they are still very pricey!

I googled too….but saw mostly men’s ones. They were very high quality material.

Yes, I only saw men’s housecoats too, but I was reading up on them and learned they have been around for a very long time. They look warm; you would want to stay in them all day long and forget about your regular clothes.

I think they have some wool in them? But I always liked red tartan plaid and those are the ones I remember the old Eatons store downtown TO had. Were you able to walk today?

Hi Joni – I always liked red tartan plaid too. I used to have a kilt skirt with the pin on it that I wore with a black turtleneck for years. Unfortunately, I did not walk yesterday (Saturday) as it was too cold and windy. I went out to run the car for about 30 minutes and the temps were in single digit temps and very windy. Today was even worse with those windchills way below zero. We are supposed to get better on Wednesday, up to 40, then snow on the weekend again. It’s not even Winter!! It was too bad since the streets were clear and the sun was shining. But way too cold and it was treacherous at the Park when I walked on Friday. Did you get out to walk or is it still icy?

No, I did not walk – it was 12F with a wind chill of 1 F or in -11 and 17 in Celsius. I stuck my head out the door and decided it was too cold, even though the sun was out here too.

I ran the car for about 40 minutes as it was so cold … I kept thinking “what a waste of a sunshine-y day in December.”

Yes, fun memories color memories for you Diane (oh, you youngster you, who is younger than me.) 🙂 Now you can make a reservation to see Santa at a mall or wherever he is appearing, so you don’t have to stand in line. But, standing in line and looking at all the toys and animated displays in Toyland was part of the fun!

The good old days! 🙂 This newfangled idea of making an appointment to see Santa kind of ruins the whole experience.

Yes, the good old days Debbie and they were fun back then because going to see Santa was a big deal. I don’t like the idea of making an appointment to see Santa either. There’s no chance for excitement to build while waiting in line. I wonder if you need to book extra time for a photo?

I like the photos! My favourite thing at Christmas, as far as decorations, is reindeer or garlands that are lit up and decorated. I do love reindeer.

Thank you Susan! I was from the B&W era for going to see Santa at Eaton’s or Simpsons and going through Toyland and the animations there and in the store windows. Downtown at Christmastime was a hoppin’ place and probably still is. I know you go to Toronto to visit your son at the holidays – do you go Downtown to see the decorations? They used to decorate the store windows at Hudson’s Department Store in Downtown Detroit until it closed in 1993. I like those type of decorations too – simple, but nice. My neighbor used to put white wire reindeer with clear lights on her deck and had garland around the deck with the clear lights. I mention that because she said since we didn’t put outdoor Christmas decorations out, she would do this for our benefit so we could look out and see her decorations. She also decorated the front yard too.

I loved going downtown Toronto when I was younger. I’m not sure if we will go downtown when we go or not, we usually walk to a different neighbourhood and check it out. I love the reindeer, we used to have some for our front yard but over the years, they crashed, one by one! We didn’t bother replacing them but we have other things we put out.

Toronto was fun at Christmastime, especially if you went to the Santa Claus Parade just before. Driving to see the neighborhood lights and displays is nice too. I used to walk around and see the neighborhood decorations and light displays. Not one person has decorated on our entire block, but they were all decorated to the hilt for Halloween, but then we had our first snowfall with ice and windy conditions over Thanksgiving weekend, so people probably put it off and then it’s been crummy ever since. Our city has a contest for best display, so they post videos and/or still shots of all the houses that have a lot of displays or decorations, then you pick the winner. You don’t even have to brave the cold and/or ice and snow to see them. 🙂

Yes, it’s great to get a picture with the big guy too. Thank you Esther -I’m glad you liked it. I wanted to try out the B&W image as I kept telling you I’d try it one day … that was simpler than getting the coveted rainbow I also told you I’d find some day. Maybe in 2026? 🙂

Thanks Tom! This was in a little downtown shopping area and it was nostalgic looking, so I had to take a shot of it. Very true – pointing to the heart and away from the commercialism is the best way! I know YOU know who said “Peace is always beautiful.” I hope you are feeling up to par as we get into the holiday season.
