BADGES

Beautiful photos of the Cardinals.

Thank you – I feed the squirrels and birds at a park where I walk most days (at least until this icy cold and snowy blast) and I feel like Snow White sometimes when they gather at my feet. 🙂

They are enjoying my sunflowers too!

Those sunflower seeds keep them going all Winter!

I like the little stand, to give extra attention to a favorite ornament. You’ve got a good one there!

Thank you Dave – I’m glad you like it. This Cardinal ornament is more for a big tree, so we got the stand for it. My mom liked Cardinals and this ornament was one of her favorites.

They are such pretty birds. We always enjoy seeing them.

They really are beautiful bird – I agree with you Dan. If you get a minute sometime, look up Jocelyn Anderson Photography on social media. She is a local photographer whom I follow on Facebook. She goes to Kensington Park daily and takes videos of the birds that land on her palm for seeds and treats, plus she takes a lot of wonderful still shots of them as well. The videos are a few relaxing moments well spent.

Thanks. I popped over to her FB page. The video I watch was amazing.

I knew you would enjoy it Dan, infusing just a little bit of calm in our busy day. She even has large birds like Mourning Doves alight and feed from her hand – just amazing.

Thank you Anne! Cardinals are such beautiful birds and you know me, if I can put some alliteration or a pun in my title, I’m all for it!

I especially like the one of the two females, it looks like one is the mirror image of the other.

I also thought it was interesting how they looked in the photo Dawn. They were happy for peanuts which they take to go, but I also sprinkled some sunflower seeds down too.

Male cardinals look so striking! 😍 The females are interesting too, wtih their different colours. Love the ornament!

I think so too Debbie – Cardinals and Blue Jays with their distinctive crests and vibrant colors; even the female with the crest and bright-orange beak is spectacular. Glad you like the ornament. My mom liked Cardinals and Blue Jays, so this was an ornament we got a long time ago. Since we didn’t have a full-sized Christmas tree, we put the ornament on an ornament stand instead.

I am amazed that you can get cardinals to snack on peanuts! I don’t put out bird feeders anymore, but when I did, the cardinals were so picky. They turned up their noses (beaks?) for anything except black sunflower seeds. You must have the touch, Linda!

I’m sorry your cardinals were so picky Laurie. The birds in the Park aren’t as picky, especially since I don’t think as many people in the neighborhood feed them anymore. I know they love sunflower seeds, so I also sprinkle some sunflower seeds down with the peanuts. They take the peanuts to go, cache them somewhere, then return for sunflower seeds. For Winter I take along the chipped peanuts for Cardinals and Chickadees, but only if I can stay there and ensure the squirrels don’t get them … it’s instant gratification for the squirrels: “thanks Linda, I don’t even have to crack these open!” The Blue Jays, if no squirrels are around, pick up the peanuts to weigh which ones weigh the most before taking them up to the tree to eat!

They are stunning red beauties Brian – this is the type of bird I mentioned to you the other day that could match me note for note as I whistled back at it.

Nice photos, Linda. A beautiful splash of color in the wintertime. They are always the first ones to my feeder when I put new food out.

Thank you Rebecca – they are such beautiful birds and you’re right, they are a much-needed splash of color in wintertime. Those sunflower seeds will lure them in a heatbeat.

Oh how wonderful to see these cardinals, Linda! The red males are so stunning but the subtle colors of the females are delightful! Wish we had them here! Happy week before Christmas!

Terri, I really enjoy seeing the cardinals at the Park too. I feed them sunflower seeds as well, but they like to grab a peanut, fly off and cache it, then return for seeds. I have a pair of cardinals that follow me around the Park, then tweet from the tree so I see them and put down some seeds and peanuts just for them. I have a designated spot by a park bench so it is hidden from the piggy Blue Jays and squirrels. 🙂 Yes, one week today ’til Christmas – same to you! It is 49 degrees here right now. I hated to come home from my walk as it was balmy!

I love Cardinals and I think the females are just as pretty. I do like your Cardinal ornament.

I agree with you Susan. They are beautiful and a few years ago I had one nest in my barberry bush. It was a very cold May and she was very raggedy looking from scrunching down in the nest and going in and out of the thorny branches. But it was fun watching her, but they fledged pretty quickly. I think she was sick of me checking her out all the time! My mom loved Cardinals and Jays and we got that ornament quite a while ago. The Christmas tree was too small to hang it on, so we had to get an ornament hanger. I thought it would go nicely with my Cardinal photos.

Thank you Tom! I really like Cardinals and often see them at the Park, like these two, which I believe is a mated pair that follow me around as I feed the squirrels. They are beautiful birds. I didn’t know they were your state bird – our state bird is the Robin. Happy Holidays to you as well!

Barbara, they are beautiful birds and so festive with their colors, well – the male anyway, for the holiday season. I am glad you got to see this special ornament that we have commented on before.

Cardinals are so pretty. I have an ornament that was my grandmother’s and it looks like the one you have.

I think they are pretty too Diane. That was my mom’s favorite ornament as she liked cardinals, so I thought I’d take it out since I had the Cardinal photos. It was too big for our small tree, so we had to get an ornament hanger for it. Did your grandmother like cardinals too, or just liked the ornament?

She loved cardinals, I also kept a cardinal sun catcher that is Christmas theme.

I’m trying to recall if my grandmother ever mentioned birds. She liked squirrels until they got into her attic and caused a lot of damage. My mom loved her cardinals though … there are several around the house and we had a Christmas ceramic bell with a cardinal, which I guess is with the Christmas ornaments, which I do intend to put up next year.

I have never forgotten the panic that set in at the beginning of my formal education when the teacher told us all to color a cardinal. The problem was that I had no idea what color a cardinal was supposed to be. I was embarrassed to ask, so another kid clued me in. I have, of course, never forgotten that cardinals are red. These are great shots!

JP, I’m glad you liked the shots. Like you, I never saw cardinals (nor blue jays) when I was growing up. We lived in a new sub and there were no trees planted or they were spindly and too small for birds to nest in. We had a meadow the end of the street, with just a creek. I never saw cardinals and jays until we moved to the U.S. in 1966.
