About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Thank you Esther! I am not sure what he was doing as he was the only squirrel there, but I thought he truly looked like he was kissing the tree more than hugging it, but it worked well for Earth Day/Wordless Wednesday! 🙂

      • They are cute pictures! If I approached a squirrel, it would’ve went skedaddling and no modeling pics for me. You’re good with animals. Kids always ask how you get squirrels to come up to you with treats when we are trying to feed them. We end up tossing walnuts to them because they won’t come near.

This squirrel was so intent on hugging (or kissing) this tree, it didn’t pay attention to me. Usually the squirrels here at Elizabeth Park go up to people because so many people toss them peanuts, or other goodies. I’ve seen sandwiches, fruit, tortilla chips … they feast on them all. I’ll bet if you go back to the same place a few days in a row, even give it a week’s time and they will be running toward you. They are all leery at first and will approach slowly, then get closer and closer. Even when I had my regular group of squirrels at Council Point for all those years, I would never feed them from my hand, but if I held the very tip of a peanut between my thumb and forefinger and only if I had gloves on, they would inch closer. They might hear a sudden noise (car, motor, anything) and react by jumping up and it would startle you – they might bite. I am hoping we have some babies to add to the mix soon. The first litters are born in February and they don’t emerge from the next for 8 weeks. I am hopeful anyway.

Yes, they are Terri! In this case it was in a park and I wasn’t sure if the squirrel was hugging or kissing this tree, but it sure was attached to it! Yes, bless all of Mother’s Earths earthlings, no matter the type!

Thank you Monica! The Park where I walk had a lot of squirrels, 35-40 a day and I liked interacting with them and feeding them and they were in a lot of my posts, that is, until they tore the Park up on one side and now I’m lucky if I see five squirrels. I’m hoping for lots of babies to replenish the furry friends that are gone.

Very well said Tom – it is the same for me. I have concerns about this tick explosion here in Michigan, supposedly worse than last year. Not something I’m looking forward to dealing with once May arrives (with hopefully consistent better weather, but who knows about that?) The emergency rooms here are already full of folks with tick bites! April has been hit and miss with the weather and we had a tornado in this city the morning of April 15th – it was just a couple of miles from me, which is too close for comfort.

      • I don’t know if i told you, but Amazon sells Sawyer Products Premium Permethrin Insect Repellent for Clothing, Gear & Tents, which is good for spraying on your pants and shoes to repel ticks and other insects. But nothing works 100% to keep ticks off.

Severe Tornadoes occurred just a little north of me in Kankakee, and more possible Tornado weather is due for this coming Monday. With global warming, we’d better get used to this kind of thing (unfortunately).

I swear that this chipmunk was hugging the tree, if not kissing it! I thought at first it had stashed some treats there, but never saw any! I wish we had chipmunks around here. It is rare when I see one and never at any of the parks near me. They are so cute.
