About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

So, how does zero birds in the hand measure up to only 1 in the bush?

He sure is Ann Marie. He flew into that plant when he saw me and he thought I couldn’t see him. 🙂 That photo was taken at the Taylor Garden Club’s Volunteer Garden by the old log cabin.

I was happy to find this Sparrow in the plant – it flew away when it saw me and figured I didn’t see it. Just as I snapped the photo, it was off again, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it when I had the image on the computer screen.

Thank you Tom – your comment made my day! (Especially after a very long day of severe weather here in my area.) This was such a sweet little Sparrow. It saw me and dove into this Cup Plant thinking I couldn’t see it there. 🙂

      • It’s too hot out there to be roaming around taking pictures of nature. We are trapped indoors. But i have so many critters in the garage that i feel like i am in nature.

Yes it is Tom and you are lucky to get your “nature fix” by simply walking to the garage. I have to tell you that the appeal for nature walks has lost its appeal between the threats of bites from ticks, now two types of mosquitos with EEE and West Nile virus detected, plus this issue with toxic algae if you breathe it makes me think no walks until October and cooler weather. There is likely a lot of storm damage in big parks as well. This storm was pretty bad. I’ve seen storm damage pics two blocks from my house and I am lucky indeed. I lost power, lost internet and have spotty internet now, but no damage thankfully – hope you are unscathed as well.

Thank you Ruth! I was so surprised I actually got a picture of it. This little bird bolted when it saw me and went into the plant, figuring it eluded me, but then a few seconds later we were staring at each other, eye-to-eye. 🙂

  10. what a cutie surprise to find! You have sharp eyes and the animals know to stick around a few seconds more for you to take their pics.

I thought it was such a cute Sparrow too Esther, kind of tucked inside this pretty Cup Plant. Perfect for me to take its picture and I’m pretty sure it thought it was doing a good job hiding from me. 🙂

I’m having a hard time finding the url to the picture link (being tech savvy is not my strong suit!) but I did want to comment that the bird you captured is so beautiful. My mom recently got the kids window stickers of many different birds, and every time we see one we can add it to the window!

Hi Mackenzie – I will look back at our recent comments and try and figure it out. I do remember I sent a link or a picture. This bird really surprised me as it was startled and flew into this plant to hide from me, then looked right out at me. I guess it thought I couldn’t see it – maybe it was a baby? I was happy I got the shot when I saw it on the screen. I remember those bird stickers and I thought that was a very cute idea – a great way to learn about birds. I know some people load birdsong apps on their phones. Then, if they hear a song in the woods, the app identifies the bird. I’m not tech savvy about phones at all.
