About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

You’ve shared this picture before, right? And then he climbs up your leg.
Cool picture for national walking today. It’s a good thing I walked a bit!
    Love, light and glitter

You are right Eliza. I had a picture of my shoes I took yesterday – took them off as I wanted them to look worn and old but the picture wasn’t good, so I used this one I have indeed used before and another of my cutie pie Parker. Love, light and glitter back at you!

National Walking Day is today? This is for realies, not an April Fool’s Day joke? ‘Cuz today I’m being super cautious about believing anything. You understand.

Wow! You are really putting the miles in. Way to go, Linda. You are going to crush your last year’s totals.

Thanks Ruth – I’m weighing whether to continue to walk during the next two weeks for this peak time of the virus – they encourage getting outside to exercise, yet I heard Mike Shaw, the MSP Lieutenant on WWJ today and he said “no joyriding on motorcycles or cars, just essential travel” – made me stop and think even though they encourage going to parks, they have said this. I have other parks around me, but they are without the nature setting and no paths. Will dwell on it some more. You sew as do your sisters, but look at this mask without sewing anything:

I do think wearing some kind of face covering is a good idea. Even if it doesn’t stop what we might be breathing in it can remind us not to touch our face which is a bad habit that we often do without thinking.
Even if you don’t go walking I think it’s still important to get outside especially when the sun is shining. (But that’s just my opinion.) I am so glad we have the farm to go to and it is essential that we do so. The chickens must be cared for and growing our own food seems more important than ever.

I’ve always been careful during Winter and flu season so just a little more diligent now. I brought home a bad cold years ago and my mom got it and had a mild case of pneumonia. It was Winter and she could not get out in the ice/snow due to mobility problems – by the time she got to the doctor, it was a mild case, but very scary so I started being extra diligent – that was 20 years ago. I don’t know if people will “mask-up” at the Park. I’ve seen two people doing it – one works in a healthcare field – she wears scrubs while walking – don’t know what she does fir a kuvubg. We don’t do any more than say “hello” – she does not walk in the cold months – she wore a bandana the other day, but like a cowboy would do, not this way. Yes, the sunshine is important for us all and to stay healthy. I’ve got some parks without paths where I can bulk up my miles if the Park may be closed down or something else. You are lucky that you are so self-contained there, but then you are always prepared for power outages and can easily handle that emergency. Stay safe Ruth.

Thanks Laurie – I am hopeful to do just that. We had a very mild Winter for Michigan (contrary to what they predicted) and I got out more than I thought I would. Last weekend was abysmal – no miles walked between the heavy rain and the high winds. It would be a shame if the Coronavirus puts a cramp in walking after such a good start.

Thanks Ann Marie. I took a photo of my walking shoes to show how worn they looked but took them in the cellarway and the linoleum is a red-brick look and cast a pink glow on the shoes so I went with these. Parker was cute, so I had to include him here. I hope you can get out tomorrow and Friday mornings as it will be nicer and even sunny.

Thanks Diane – I hope to continue my daily walks at the Park if we are still permitted to go outside … and Mother Nature cooperates as well,. I am looking forward to watching Spring unfold and seeing all the feathered babies. 🙂

Thanks Sandra – this was because we had a fairly mild Winter so I was able to get out more, especially on weekends when I try to get 5-6 miles in each weekend day in good weather, so I could do that amount all Winter. There have been years where I had to essentially start from scratch in late March/early April to build up my daily miles again as I’d barely walked all Winter. Only the ice stopped me this Winter as very little snow. I hope to continue this pace, unless we are forced to stay inside – so far we can still go out to walk/run/hike and bike – they are discouraging taking a car ride except for essential trips, so I wonder if that will stop people from venturing to parks that are in more rural areas? Sandra – I would stay in Iowa as long as you can – Michigan is now third in the nation for Coronavirus cases … stay put as long as you can. I’m glad you celebrated too – I’ll remind you when it is National Hiking Day.

I finally saw Parker today Joni. I drove to the Park today to give the car a small run. I shut the car door and he saw me and came running over. He was foraging near the parking lot. I was happy to see him. The longer time went by and with the Cooper’s Hawks above, I was getting very worried about him.

Are the Cooper Hawks only a problem in the springtime, or are they there year round?

No, they are around year around and this past Winter, I was driving and one swooped down from a tree as I passed under it – it barely missed the windshield with a big wing – I was sure it was going to come crashing through. We have them in the neighborhood, sitting up high, even teaching their young how to “hunt” prey like mice and small birds … yes, even squirrels.
