Why a Duck? Why not a Seagull? #Wordless Wednesday #Marx (Bros.) Madness!

Wordless Wednesday – allow your photo(s) to tell the story.

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each and every post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things I see on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, and so my blog is peppered with folks I meet, or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post that day. I respect and appreciate nature and my interaction with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. My career has been in the legal field and I have been a legal secretary for four decades, primarily working in downtown Detroit, and now working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in print journalism in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met and shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing once again in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy – hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

  1. Hmmmmm… good question!

It seems like Seagulls rule most times Barbara. Today I went to the Park and there was a Seagull convention of some sort. I have seen maybe 15-20 Seagulls hovering around the Creek or actually sitting/floating like a duck to eat the dead shad, but there were no dead shad today. Some of the Creek was still covered in ice. There must have been 100 gulls altogether, most of them sitting in a field and the others flying about. And they all were shrieking – it was maddening to hear them (and a little disconcerting too).

      • Gull distress calls can sound so unearthly…

Yes, the piercing screech is unearthly and they were back at it again this morning Barbara. Lots of gulls and I took some photos but there were so many of them milling about or taking flight, the photos probably won’t show what I saw. I saw a raccoon this morning, so that was fun. I kept my distance and hopefully I got some good shots when it looked up at me. 🙂

Definitely mis-labeled. I see those seagulls.

Those seagulls get around, that’s for sure Peggy. I was at Council Point Park this morning and there must have been 100 seagulls there, many sitting on the field, the rest swooping and diving. I’ve never seen that before and what a commotion they were making. I have no idea why – I saw no fish in the Creek for them to be carrying on like that. It was a little eerie to be honest.

“Duck Soup” came to mind, but not “Animal Crackers” or “Monkey Business”. Take your pick, right? Now I wonder what’s going on at the Wood Chuck pavilion?

Dave, you are the only one so far that picked up on that line being from a Marx Brothers movie. The “Viaduct, Why Not a Chicken?” was a comedy routine from “The Cocoanuts” (circa 1929). I had to Google that info. Now, to be honest, I have never seen a Marx Brothers skit or movie, but remembered hearing the line and it worked well for these photos. When I was on the college newspaper, two staffers were having a conversation about directions. One guy said “you go under a viaduct ….” The other guy said “why not a chicken?” I heard the conversation and wondered “what in the world???” So it turned out Tim and Steve both loved the Marx Brothers and had memorized dialogue verbatim from many of their movies – guess they’d be good at Trivia Night. I saw the seagulls sitting there and took that shot, then they flew the coop – a good chance to use that line. I have to check out other pavilions as they name them after Metropark critters!

My brothers and I watched a few of the Marx Brothers’ movies but I think we were too young to appreciate some of the humor or the one-liners. Harpo was our favorite even though Groucho had the best lines. I can still picture Groucho pacing with his cigar – hilarious.

I had a class in college for my mass communications course where we had to watch a lot of old movies. Sometimes the professor brought in movie reels and others he had taped using one of the first VCRs. This was around 1976 or 1977 and it was a huge contraption. We never saw Marx Brothers movies, but watched Buster Keaton and Mary Pickford movies and “The Great Train Robbery” and how that contributed to the class, I have no idea!

  6. The park planners could have named it after seagulls and ducks would have congregated–you know how that works, right, Linda? Great captures!

Yes, I do Terri … always expect the opposite when it comes to birds and animals. I went to my regular park this morning and there were about 100 seagulls shrieking their heads off … I’ve never seen that before. About 80 of them were sitting on the grounds – a seagull convention! Glad you liked the photos … something a little different and whimsical for March Madness.

Welp, obviously it’s up to you to get TPTB to correct that sign.

    • Linda Schaub says:

Yes, I should work on that sign getting corrected Ally. I’ll stop at the Marshlands Museum, next time I am there. 🙂 The people reserve their pavilions for get-togethers and the seagulls got there before the crowd arrived. Talk about counting your chickens before they’re hatched!

The seagulls were protesting the name of the pavilion. And they can be pretty strident!

Yes they are Laurie! Coincidentally I got to Council Point Park this morning to find about 100 seagulls shrieking their heads off. About 20 or so in the sky swooping and diving and the rest were on the ground. It was eerie sounding and the Creek was still lightly frozen over so they didn’t see fish running. That is a first for me and I’ve been walking there 10 years next month.

Glad you liked the post Dan. I had a little fun with the photos and my heading. I had two college friends who had memorized many Marx Brothers dialogues and would break out into a conversation/skit for no reason at all and they wouldn’t miss a beat. Thank you for following my blog.

  11. Maybe that’s the name for a seagull that stands on wood. Lol

Seagulls make their own rules sometimes. 🙂 Down at the Park, there were about 100 seagulls there all week. The shad are running, yet I didn’t see them, but asked the guy who fishes there all the time – he sits right at the water, so saw them. Imagine the noise of 100 seagulls screeching, diving, swooping … some of them are sitting in the baseball field … I have never seen so many seagulls at one time, even down at the Detroit River. I took pictures of them today.

  12. Funny! I can’t imagine ducks wanting to stake their rightful territory on the top of the roof. I think the gulls’ perch is safe 🙂

I think you are right Janis! One day I went to the Park where I walk daily and a couple of Canada geese were walking around the top of the pavilion roof. I’ve never seen them do that – they are either in flight or on the ground. It looked really odd.

Wood ducks sea gulls? Only if they open their eyes and look. 🙂

I loved the Marx Brothers as a kid, but have not watched one of their movies in a long time.

There you go again JP – good riddle there! 🙂 I have never seen a Marx Brothers movie but in college, a couple of guys on the newspaper staff were Marx Brothers fans and they knew whole dialogues by heart. The very first time I heard them do these impromptu dialogues was when someone asked for directions and the other said “by the viaduct” and the other guy said “why a duck, why not a chicken?” And so it began – they were huge fans.
