About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

  1. Ah, deeply reflecting on reality and illusion… The last picture reminds me of a dreamy Impressionist painting.

I love seeing reflections on the water Barbara and these were stunning, so clear that I had to take a picture of the actual group of trees to show the contrast between “real” and “reflection” and you’re right that it does look like a dreamy Impressionist painting.

Photos showing reflections in the water are one of my favorite kinds. I just love the symmetry. Maybe the Mallard in the top photo is looking at himself in his “mirror”!

Yes she was. I really like Mallards too – they seem to stay put longer than geese. I just got some close-up Mallard shots on Sunday. They have built a new wooden overlook at Heritage Park and the top of the railing is quite wide so two Mallards were sitting on opposite railings, perfectly still, like they wanted to have their picture taken! I was happy to oblige them.

I didn’t dwell on the reflections so much as the mallard’s habitat in the first photo. Short of a nest, he’s got everything he needs: water, shade, a safe place to perch, and probably plenty of food in the grass behind him.

The Mallard was all by itself, kind of sitting in the Catbird seat wasn’t it? There were no predators around and I don’t think it saw me at all as it didn’t stir. Contentment reigned.

Mallards are endlessly interesting to observe– and photograph quite well.

I agree with you Ally. They seem to stay put longer than other ducks, like they are posing for you, unlike the other types who often waddle off. I just got some more pics of Mallards on Easter Sunday which I’ll be using in an upcoming Wordless Wednesday post.

Linda, that last painting is like a Monet painting! I wonder what creatures think when they see themselves reflected in the water? Am I fat? Is it a bad hair day? Today was gorgeous, sat outside and read for 2 hours this afternoon, and walked in a t-shirt.
Yesterday I prune my rose bushes. I will gmail you when the weather turns nasty again….this will not last!

I wonder the same thing Joni, especially when the water is perfectly calm like it was here on that day. I had a picture last year of a goose standing in a grassy ditch where water had gathered and it was intently gazing down at the water as if it was saying “mirror mirror” … the weather is so warm and it got to 84 today. Like a Summer day. I was dressed too warmly both days to walk – tomorrow I will know better. Our weather will be nasty Saturday late in the day and possible severe weather Sunday. So I won’t be online and maybe can return to my book which I’m really behind in reading. Take your time – no worries!

I know I shouldn’t complain but I found today too hot! It was 82. Had to put the A/C on in the house last night as it was reading 76 just to cool it down. Our bodies can’t adjust to that quick a change. Hot tomorrow and Sat too, but next week maybe wet flurries again. First time I walked just wearing a t-shirt this year. Too tired to tackle Reader tonight and 12:30 again…..thanks for the e-card. I was saving it for mom to watch as she was sleeping when I got it, and today they sent me a reminder notice, but I hadn’t forgotten it, I just hadn’t been on g-mail. Morning Has Broken – old Cat Stevens song.

I am right there with you Joni – just too hot already and too fast. Where was Spring for goodness sake? It was hot here today and tomorrow as well and then, of course, there will be severe weather to “break the heat” – I was waiting for that to happen. When we kept having all those volatile storms last Summer, it was the same scenario, over and over again and I think we had 22 or 24 severe storms in the Summer months. You’re welcome – hope your mom enjoys it. I used to love Cat Stevens. I’m surprised I didn’t wear the album out playing it so much. With this severe weather this weekend, I hope to get back to my book which will be a good distraction as I am a weather worrier.

Today we went to the park at the beach and there were tons of people on the beach, some in bathing suits! I thought the breeze was a little cool for that, but it was nice out. I couldn’t use my new camera as the battery had worn down as I hadn’t used it since November….

I am glad it is returning to cooler weather, but really – snow showers! We are still supposed to get a strong storm (they say and I hope they are wrong). Tomorrow morning it will be in the 20s … that is just crazy! The batteries run down fairly quickly. I got a second battery to have on hand especially in Winter – then I carry both batteries. They do run down quickly. I haven’t used the DSLR since October – I charge the batteries every so often but leave them out of the camera until I am ready to use the camera.

Thanks Linda…it’s a square lithium battery, and the camera shop never said anything about having a spare on hand. I’ll have to ask them about it. Quite a change in the weather! Had to put the furnace on again!

You’re welcome Joni – the day I bought the camera, it was on sale for Father’s Day. I had a really helpful salesgirl at Best Buy and she recommended what size photo card to get and to get the extra battery to keep on hand, especially if taking a lot of photos, or using the video feature. She also recommended that I get a larger camera card in case I shot video as I would need more memory then. The weather is crazy! I had an allergy shot appointment and when I left this morning, the snow as lightly twinkling down, not sticking. I drove about one mile and it stopped snowing and was raining hard. It took me a half-hour to dry off the car to put it away with the trickle charger on it. Saturday it is 80 again!

Those reflected scenes are really fascinating to me. You captured them beautifully. I really love the last two that are (literally) mirror images.

I love seeing reflections on the water too JP – thank you. The last two really struck me the day I saw them and I was happy to see the camera captured just what I saw with those mirror images.
