I thought so too Anne – I swear I thought they were getting ready for a standoff in the park. 🙂

A furry tail of foraging me thinks.

Wayne, I got these pics as I happened to be standing there when the car stopped to toss out peanuts … I think it is a daily routine for them, so they were sitting there in anticipation of the treat. Those two squirrels looked like they were ready to lunge at each other! And I thought the first squirrel with the peanut in its mouth was adorable as it took in all the action. This was the collection of photos where I had the gray squirrel splooting with peanuts between its paws but already used that photo. An unexpected treasure trove of photos.

Squared off indeed! Locked and loaded in the first photo, as if to say, “Come at me… just try!”

I loved those two shots Dave! The car stopped to throw peanuts out the window and I gather this is a daily occurrence as those two top squirrels looked like a couple of gunfighters at the O.K. Corral. 🙂 That first squirrel with the peanut in its mouth seemed to watch them like a spectator. An unexpected treat for me when I saw the photos on the screen.

I don’t think I would want to get between them and the peanuts. Fun photos!

Thanks Rebecca – I know what you mean; for sure they would run you right over trying to get to those peanuts!

They are funny Ally. They are short when on all fours, so they stand up as they can see better and so you can see them. 🙂

They do love their peanuts!

Yes, it was so funny Susan – I was lucky to be right there when the people stopped to throw peanuts out of the car window. The first handful got scooped up and the other squirrels must’ve recognized the car and were poised to grab peanuts ASAP.

Cute, Linda! Love the black one that photobombed!

Thanks Terri – it was so funny because these squirrels recognized the car and the folks who throw the peanuts out the window. They were poised ready to grab a peanut – that little black squirrel wanted part of the action too and indeed photobombed! Gotta love squirrels!

Yes they are Terri. I was at the same park once and a van rolled up and parked near a steep slope that leads to the Canal. There are several Pekin ducks that live here, but mostly Mallards. So they were in the water and one duck saw the van and they all started to waddle up this hill. I happened to be near the van so I watched as the man and woman got out, swung the back of the van open and put down a ramp – they Pekins waddled up the ramp and ate from a huge bucket of corn. Then the man rolled the heavy bucket down the ramp and took it to the edge of the road and he only had to throw out one handful of corn and all the ducks were surrounding him. The Pekins were nuzzling the man and womens’ knees. I was talking to the couple afterward and they arrive the same time daily and do the same ritual. They probably have a “lookout duck” to watch for them. 🙂

Around 64 million years ago, our ancestors were around the same size as squirrels and probably acted a lot similar. The Purgatorius species, for example…

Interesting Tom. The other day I heard a story that an ancient cave dwelling wall had drawings which might have been of a flat dough-like substance and what might have been pesto, making it seem like pizza was a treat even back then.

I’m still blown away by the black squirrels. So pretty!

They are pretty, very sleek and shiny and a fluffy tail. They are much warier of humans than the gray squirrels. The Fox squirrels are not afraid at all, given their size I guess.

Adorable pictures Linda! Does the 3rd picture squirrel maybe have mange? I was wondering if it is harmful to humans and here is what I found. Sarcoptic and notoedric mange are highly contagious and can be spread to humans by handling infected wildlife or touching contaminated items. Just in case please be safe!

Thanks Diane – those squirrels were so sweet. They recognized the car and the people who throw them peanuts, so there they were ready to pounce on them. When I saw the photos on the screen, I thought it looked like a standoff. 🙂 I read the link you sent me – thank you for sending it. I didn’t realize that it was contagious to humans – the closest I get is if I hold out a peanut and they take it, but that is not all the time – now that I read the article, I won’t be doing even that – I had no idea. I thought it was interesting that there is a specific mange for red foxes and coyotes – we have a lot of coyotes around here lately … no foxes unfortunately. I had not noticed the gray squirrel’s mange until you mentioned it … I only was noticing the peanut in its mouth as it was eying more peanuts.
I do see squirrels at the Park with mange and one Fox Squirrel has it so bad on his back that it looks like a design on there … a big diamond-shaped patch. That would be bad if you had a dog and it went out in the yard if a squirrel had mange – it might bring it back on its paws and then touch its human. Glad I don’t have a pet as we have a ton of squirrels around the house. I just stopped feeding them last week as I was trying to feed the Cardinals and Chickadees – they made a mess spilling the safflower seeds (which fell into the lava rocks and have now sprouted about 100 little safflowers – no dirt, just between the rocks, from the rain and hot weather). I switched to the shelled peanuts – birds loved them. But, the squirrels were climbing up and tipping the feeder … climbing up into the bushes (I hid it in the bushes for the birds who happily found it). I went out one morning – squirrels inside the bushes – birds watching them from the patio roof.
Thank you again for the tip Diane.
