I do my best pondering of life’s mysteries while walking along a nature trail, my thoughts interrupted only by birdsong and squirrels clamoring for peanuts at my feet. Yes, I feel like Snow White sometimes.
So, on the cusp of Easter, I ask you this question: “What does the Easter Bunny do when his gig is over and he retires?”
Years of hopping and bopping down the bunny trail kept this fella limber, so likely, since old habits never die, he packs a few carrots and goes on a long hike …
… or maybe catches up on his TBR book pile …
… and, if he’s still young at heart, that retired Easter Bunny might just while away the hours with simple joys.
Just like Peter Cottontail, I also will be doing a lot more hopping and bopping along the many trails here in Southeast Michigan …
… catching up on my reading …
… and loving every minute of the simple joys that await me now that I am retired.
Spending more time in nature is the best present I can give myself and it keeps on giving as I carry home the images of the day in my mind, on my camera’s photo card and then share them here in my blog.
Happy Easter to all of you. I hope your Easter basket is similarly filled with joy and blessings (and maybe a little chocolate too). Please click here for my Easter greeting.
This post’s vintage bunny photos are from Rebeca Green’s Etsy site “Atlas Vintage Prints” and I am sending Rebeca a link to this post as I told her how I would use these sweet bunny prints.

The bunny prints are beautiful, as is your writing. Retirement is wonderful, I’ve enjoyed it for 9 years now. Being out in the woods is one of my favorite things to do.

Thank you Dawn – I am looking forward to enjoying every minute of it, just as you do, being out in the woods especially.

That’s amazing Wayne – some of these were not the bunny rabbits you and I grew up with and looked scary looking. Speaking of scary, I was sitting here at the computer, the lights went off and a downed wire fell on the ground and was arcing, then caught on fire. It’s a holiday weekend, so they got here in about 45 minutes or so and fixed it … me, who believes in things happening in threes is now very nervous. You remember the downed wire in December 2022.

I’m surprised you didn’t run out to skip over the dancing wire!
So why are there no “good things” happening in threes?
I heard NFLD got hit hard with rain!

Do you still correspond with a woman in Newfoundland – I think it was your first follower if I remember correctly, but she is not a blogger. (I hope I’m not wrong and that was Babsje, but I don’t think so as she was not a blogger.) It was not a good day Wayne … here I was ready to mosey over to my blog for comments on today’s post and the lights flickered, I heard that sound of the wire arcing likely on the metal fence, just like last time. I shut the lights, the computer, shut off the heat and ran outside. I grabbed my coat and ran out the door. Almost three hours later the downed wire was repaired and I came in. It was cold, but not horrible but I came back in for more clothes after the fire stopped – there were two more small fires. Thank goodness that tree is gone, just this week. I worry about bad things happening in three … I am superstitious. I hope that is the end of it, though I saw a branch hanging by a thread over the wire from another tree behind me.

Yes,I still chat with my friend in NFLD. She has a cat called Sam who is feisty sometimes.
No,It wasn’t Babsje. We all miss her.
I hope your stressful days are behind you now.

I think I remember you said her other cat passed away and she was looking for another companion pet, so I thought that was the same friend. They’ve had a lot of rain if I recall correctly, not just this time. But a lot of flooding too – that’s horrible. I wasn’t sure where Babsje lived, but was pretty sure it was not in Canada. I sure hope those stressful days are gone now … after 50 years of working, I am glad for a new life. (One without a fire would also be preferred!)

Yes, Linda your thought cute bunnies. The pictures were perfect for you retirement post. why yesterday was last day of work.? You was to retire the end of last year, but you stayed on as your boss moving to a new office. Why the landlord did not renew our lease after 20 years?

Hi Raj – I was supposed to retire on 12/31/23. There was a new landlord who bought our building. A billionaire named Dan Gilbert. He has bought a lot of buildings in Detroit and he bought this one and did not renew our lease, likely because he wanted to pick and choose who should be on that floor/in that suite. Maybe a new tenant? Maybe all the same company on that floor? The building takes up a city block, but is only six floors high. So he did not renew the lease but did not give a reason even though we’d been there 20 years. My boss moved in with a friend and he has an office at home now. I wanted to retire now, but my boss is 77 and wants to “die with his boots on” (a term which I don’t know if you would be familiar with, but means he wants to work forever and not retire), an idea that is not for me.

I have worked from home for many years and I still live in the same place. I won’t be working anymore now. I won’t run out of things to do – decluttering my house is high on my agenda. The landscape, except for some Spring flowers, is not that pretty right now – we have a rainy week, maybe a little snow over the next few days, so time to be productive. 🙂

Happy retirement, Linda!!! So happy for you. More time for reaching your walking goal. You will have to up your mileage next year. Happy Easter!

Thanks Laurie – I am really excited and just retired yesterday and yes, I should up my walking goal. 🙂 I’ve not done so well this first quarter between ice, then rain and I thought (mistakenly) with this El Nino Winter, I’d be ahead of the game, but now I have a lot of time to catch up and surely surpass last year’s total. I was about to respond to comments around 4:30, when the power went off and there was a downed wire and fire in the neighbor behind’s yard. You may recall this happened in December 2022 and the fire was 25 feet from where I was sleeping. I am still shaken about this and stayed outside the entire time – it caught fire a couple of more times. I’m glad it happened in the daytime … last time it happened at 11:30 p.m. and I was sound asleep. Happy Easter to you and Bill!

I do remember the previous fire! So glad you are OK. That would rattle you. Happy Easter.

I thought you might remember Laurie. Today I went to the fence and looked at the burn marks where the downed wire was snaking around wildly and it burned the neighbor behind’s lawn pretty badly – deep ruts where the hot wire was. It caught fire three times before they cut the power off. I was a nervous wreck – thankfully it happened in daylight this time, not 11:35 at night.

Kate, I am officially retired as of 5:30 last night – yay indeed! 🙂 I am looking forward to more walking adventures, but will probably still just post twice a week. I thought the bunny pictures were gorgeous too. I sent the link to Rebeca earlier, then I came here to do comments for this post when the lights went out and I heard a power line arcing on the chain link fence. I know that sound well from December 2022 and the fire that burned down my neighbor’s garage, stockade fence and took out my back garden. I shut down the laptop, grabbed my coat, shoved my shoes on and ran out. Two and half- hours later, the fire truck left, the dropped wire is hooked up again, but I’m still a bit shaken. It took the DTE Energy linemen/crew a while to get here due to the holiday weekend. There were a few more minor fires and I was a Nervous Nellie after last time.

How very scary with the downed line and fire! I’m glad that they got out there relatively quickly and I hope that it’s fixed permanently now. That tree needed to go!

Oh Zazzy – you never saw anyone bolt outside so quickly when I heard the wire hit the chain link fence. I will never forget that sound from the last time – it woke me up at 11:35 p.m.! Last time I had to get dressed as I was sleeping and in PJs. This time I just grabbed my coat, slipped into loafers out of my slippers and ran outside. Three small fires this time instead of one huge one.
I went to the fence today to look at the burn marks from the downed wire and there were deep black marks in the grass. Scary indeed and I hope it is the end of this dead tree debacle. I stayed outside the whole time yesterday and kept looking at the two trees in the yard behind me with an eye to how dangerous they might become.

Glad you liked it Brian. I just replied to you and WP went wonky and ate my reply. Well, it tops off my day … I came inside a short time ago after standing outside for almost three hours. There was a downed wire in the yard behind me and it was arcing and there were three small fires. Since it’s a holiday weekend, it took a while for the energy company linemen to come repair it. We had a fire in December 2022 from a downed power line from a big dead tree that lost a branch. They removed the tree this past week (yay), but left branches in the wires. They were going to come look at it next week. No need now – they removed them today while the power was off. It’s already Easter in Australia, so enjoy your holiday!

Thank you very much Diane – I am very happy to be retired! I love these bunny pictures and I sent the link to Rebeca’s Etsy account … that was hours ago, but I’ve been outside until a short time ago. The first day of retirement should have been restful, but we had a downed wire in the yard behind and three small fires … I stayed outside the entire time, til the wire was repaired. Happy Easter to you and Terry.

Thank you, same to you Susan. I really like Rebeca’s prints and she liked reading the post. I will give her your message. I thought they were very cute Bunny prints too. As soon as I heard that wire on the chain-link fence, I got outside in record time, worried for a fire as large as last time. I felt sick as I rushed out. Due to the holiday weekend and understaffed, the linemen didn’t arrive right away – so it kept starting up again.

The tree trimming crew came today to look if the three tree branches caught in the electrical and utility wires were dangerous and posed a threat. So they were surprised when I told them there was a downed wire and three small fires and the linemen removed those branches during the two and a half-hour power outage. I hope things don’t happen in threes Susan … I sure wish I wasn’t superstitious.

I hope you had a great Easter, Linda. Sorry I’m so behind. Also congratulations on retirement. It’s wonderful to be your own boss. Now you can do all the things you didn’t have time for. You can even sleep in or take a nap if you want to. (Naps are wonderful :))

I did Ruth – it was a quiet holiday and Saturday, there was another downed wire behind me. They cut down the big dead tree that caused the last fire, but left branches in the wires. I contacted DTE and they said they’d send someone in the next week … in the meantime, there were three small fires, but thankfully in the afternoon, so the linemen removed those branches. I hope that is the end of it. I am happy to be retired and have more time to myself and organize my life a little better. I never had a lot of time left over after work, walking, blogging, all the picture-taking to get things done in the house/outside like I used to do. This weather we are having is good for naps: gray, gloomy and cold!

I prefer not to think about the Easter Bunny in retirement – I am afraid it might involve something like stew. 🙂

Thank you JP! It is nice to have my own agenda after 50 years of working and you are absolutely right – the days are zipping by so quickly, unlike work hours that dragged on. The Easter Bunny’s fate may just end that way, though he might be a little tough.
