About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and in 2013 I decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things seen on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, so my blog is peppered with folks I meet or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post. I respect and appreciate nature and my interactions with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. I retired in March 2024 after a career in the legal field. I was a legal secretary for almost 45 years, primarily working in downtown Detroit, then working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in Mass Communications (print journalism) in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I would like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met, shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy. I hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

He/she was moving like the white rabbit in “Alice in Wonderland” (I’m late, I’m late – for a very important date. No time to say ‘hello-goodbye’ I’m late, I’m late, I’m late.”)

I didn’t know this was National Walking Day ! Not today though, it poured rain very hard most of the day and now it’s snowing for crying out loud ! We are supposed to get up to 10 cm. I can’t believe our weather lol. That Canada goose is lucky to be going for his walk !

Well, for next year, you will know that National Walking Day is always the first Wednesday in April. We had that same crummy weather yesterday Susan – torrential downpour most of the day. We are supposed to get light snow, but the Upper Peninsula may get 8 inches/20 cms of snow tonight. Crazy! Thirty miles (48 kms) from me is a prime location for viewing the eclipse and they were expecting so many people, the mayor suggested folks go to Ohio. It was supposed to be sunny Monday afternoon, but now it will not only be cloudy but raining – I guess everyone will stay home now.

We are smack dab in the alley way, so to speak, for the eclipse. We are at 100% for viewing. Our local cities and provincial parks are preparing for the onslaught of people. Hopefully the weather changes for that day.

Are you planning on going then Susan? Photographing it too? I heard a guy on the radio telling about needing a special lens for the camera, even if you use special glasses. I was just thinking of you – I saw a story on the news of a tourist on a safari who was killed when a bull elephant charged at the vehicle and was killed. They were saying how rare of an occurrence this is, but we had a local woman was killed by a hippo while on a safari a few years back. Scary stuff ….

For the eclipse, we are going to the Old Church where we live. It’s literally an Old church that is now turned into a small entertainment venue. We go there quite a lot so we are going Monday afternoon to sit and drink some wine with our friends and mostly socialize ! I am not photographing it. You aren’t supposed to use cell phones and you need a special filter for your cameras. I don’t need to buy any more equipment lol. A friend of mine spent a lot of money to buy one and then found out they are recalling them because it’s not good enough for the eclipse. Yes I saw a bull elephant charge a vehicle, maybe the same story, I’m not sure. I guess wrong place, wrong time. And it is scary for sure.

That sounds like fun. Did you get a pair of the glasses? I got a pair in case I decided to go, but they didn’t look too sturdy and I wear glasses, so for sure they won’t fit properly. A place around here is making a mint selling special welder’s glasses as they are made not only to block sparks, but the bright flares from the sparks. I did hear about the camera filter – better to not try or use a tripod, but have to be careful with the camera as it could get damaged. Have fun!

They will supply glasses but the more I read about the eclipse, I think I’ll just look at pics online afterwards!

I feel the same way Susan. I don’t feel the glasses are that secure to stay on your face since I wear glasses. They are flimsy, flat cardboard and you fold them. They are the same type of glasses most of the “viewing parties” will be offering free around here. I’ve been seeing a lot of ads online for viewing parties. I do have some concerns about eye damage. There will be some awesome photos online afterwards.

It looks like a goose on a mission – that’s for sure Ann Marie and yes, likely chasing after her hubby. In about a month you’ll be seeing goslings on your pond.

I did get a walk in today Laurie, not at the Park though as I could see a large black cloud overhead (it’s a mile away from me). That goose was intent on following something as it never saw me … no waddling along for that guy/gal. 🙂

  11. I walked today, in Walmart! But i did get to see some cool Canada Geese by a local pond. They are such wonderful creatures. I’m glad that they are not endangered and thrive across the entire country! 😊

We have a lot of them here in Michigan. It is almost gosling time and soon those yellow fuzzy darlings will be all over the pathway, their parents hissing and flapping their wings to stay away!

      • They are loyal and dedicated parents. I admire them a lot for that. Humans could learn something from watching them; these days so many human parents are dreadfully indifferent.

Yes they are Tom and if you look sideways at their goslings, they will hiss, flap their wings and even charge at you. I admire them too. I am worried because they are going to be widening the Ecorse Creek which runs through several cities/parks and one part of the Creek is at Council Point Park where I walk all the time. They will begin next week. They have a huge bulldozer that will go into the Creek, clean it of debris then widen it. I looked at the orange marks where they will be taking away the shoreline and just off the perimeter path … bad timing. Geese are sitting on nests at the shoreline … I can’t see the nests as bushes are near the shoreline so it obstructs my view, but by the end of April, all of a sudden three or four families of goslings are toddling around and paddling around with their parents in the Creek. And squirrels have their kits in mid-March and they are in nests in trees and defenseless until they are at least six weeks old. I hope they have some consideration for the offspring. Every year a goose nests in the boulders at another park where I go, so I went to take pictures of her, in the boulders and took photos of her. Will go up in a few weeks to monitor for goslings there. Yes, parents are indifferent … some people should not have children.
