Time to stop and smell the …

… chocolate.

Yup, I know you thought I was going to say roses, because, after all, it is Earth Day.

Or probably, you were wondering if you had to wade through another post about my furry friends, because, I know, sometimes those squirrels noshin’ on nuts all run together after a while.

But, actually this IS another squirrel post.  It is about Yours Truly, who is just a tad squirrelly.

Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t!

Yesterday, in my 1,300th blog post, I wrote about my friend Ann Marie dropping off a bag of Easter goodies for me on her way to church.  She both texted and e-mailed me around 7:00 a.m. to tell me she’d been by.  Before I left for my walk, I retrieved my goody bag which was two pretty dyed eggs and (what I believed) was a gold, foil-wrapped, lop-eared bunny.  I admired that “bunny” and set it on a shelf on the corner cabinet in the kitchen to eat later.  I-emailed Ann Marie and thanked her for being so thoughtful and dropping off dyed eggs and a chocolate bunny.

So, that was my first faux pas of the day and later I even mentioned this kindness in my blog post, thus,  the second faux pas.  Ann Marie has been following my blog for years, but she didn’t see this particular post as she always comments on them.  However, she sent me an e-mail late last night to tell me it was not a bunny, but a squirrel.  Of course she bought this treat knowing how much I love squirrels.  You know how squirrels love nuts?  Well, if you’ve ever had Ferrero Rocher treats, they are milk chocolate and hazelnut pieces that melt in your mouth, truly a tasty treat.  I used to buy them for my mom, then I’d insist on helping her eat them.

Red-faced, I texted Ann Marie to apologize for being so squirrelly – she replied “you’re not squirrelly!”  (I beg to differ with that sometimes.)

All I can say is that if anyone should know what a squirrel looks like, wouldn’t it be me?  If I had a dollar for every image of a squirrel I’ve posted in this blog since 2013 – well, let’s just say, I’d be a rich woman.

But instead I am a rich woman, for having a good friend who will forgive this faux pas.

About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each and every post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things I see on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, and so my blog is peppered with folks I meet, or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post that day. I respect and appreciate nature and my interaction with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. My career has been in the legal field and I have been a legal secretary for four decades, primarily working in downtown Detroit, and now working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in print journalism in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met and shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing once again in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy – hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

  1. An excellent story, Linda!!

If I were you, I’d unwrap the chocolate squirrel carefully, eat the chocolate, and use the wrapper to cover some stuffing of some sort. You could eat the candy and keep the wrapper on display.

Glad you liked it Anne! That’s a good idea. I used to keep my chocolate Easter bunny for a long time without eating it. My mom would put it in the fridge, then start egging me on when “we” would finish the bunny. Then she would accidentally drop it and say “time to eat the bunny!”

The other day I thought I’d look Ruth to see where I was – I was amazed I was on the cusp of 1,300 posts. I did more posts than usual last week – can’t do that many posts as it put me behind catching up here on Reader and also with friends’ e-mails and on Facebook. My boss left early today so I have had a little time to catch my breath for now and try to catch up. The squirrel sure is cute – I’ve never seen a chocolate squirrel before so that is why I thought it was a bunny. (That, and I likely need stronger glasses!)

Miss Linda…………………………..you’re making me smile…………………a close-up picture of the squirrel that I bought for you way back in February when they were first putting out the Easter treats
I’m glad you enjoyed it and it was a delicious kind of chocolate

Sometimes we have to laugh at ourselves Ann Marie, so this was a teaching moment for me. I admired that treat, but looking at it closer after getting your message I was scratching my head how I missed seeing it was a squirrel. I decided Easter evening to save it a little while – now I will keep it even longer, I do like Ferrero Rocher – my mom liked them, so I’d get her the mini packs sometimes and sample hers. It is melt-in-your-mouth chocolate. Thank you again.

    Dear Linda,
When you mentioned embarrassment, I didn’t realise you were going to write about it. Being sensitive I would be embarrassed too but what a great friend you have in AnnMarie. I am sure your house was dark inside and hence the faux pas. Or that you were too tired to see because of over work. I am glad though that Grady and pals didn’t get those Easter treats. You do have guts and great integrity to write about this, Linda. I would have swept it under the carpet.
Let us know when you eat the little Easter Squirrel.
What does being “squirrelly” mean ?

Hi Susie – yes, I realize I could have just talked to Ann Marie personally but I decided to just “put it out there” … Ann Marie is a fellow walker, though I’ve not seen her for about 18 months. But we e-mail all the time and she follows my blog, so I decided to make it right here. I sometimes forget when I use some terms that are popular here, that others may not understand them, those that have English as a second language in particular, but even bloggers from the UK. For sure, I could not even begin to understand idioms that bloggers in other countries use. In fact I follow quite a few bloggers from the UK and I often learn new words or idioms from them. Even Canadians have their idioms that are not used here in the U.S.. At one time I wrote a blog post about it … I’ll try to see if I can find it for you if I can figure out some key words to do so. Being “squirrelly” is just being a little quirky or eccentric, or “marching to the beat of a different drum” … when I was a kid, my mother would say to me “why do you want to be like everyone else? Learn to march to the beat of a different drum and just be you.” Good words to live by – I know I’m a little offbeat or quirky and I like being different. 🙂

Oh my gosh that is TOO sweet of Ann Marie!! What a great friend ❤ & to get you a squirrel too!! So sweet. I think it’s so endearing you thought it was a bunny. I would have thought so too considering it’s Easter ya know? Easy mistake 🙂

I’m glad more and more people are saying that Mackenzie – whew, I thought it was me and poor eyesight! Yes, she is like the chocolate – incredibly sweet and I will likely keep it sitting on the shelf to give me a smile when I see it.

I remember you stirred chocolate chips into your yogurt – I thought to myself “hmm, I must try that! I took a peek the other day and saw it was almost 1,300 posts – I was astounded. I had not looked in a while. The first 4 1 2/ years I only had a handful of subscribers, all on the outside, then suddenly things took off in 2017 around Thanksgiving … I am enjoying connecting with everyone immensely.
