Glad you like the pictures rajkkhoja. This female woodpecker has lived at the Park for a couple of years, so since I only see one of this species, I named it Dempsey.

Beautiful couple live in park. So nice& lovely you choice name of Dempsey. I like.

Glad you liked it Pam. I was lucky to see so many birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count, including this cute Downy Woodpecker.

We’ve had a reduction in bird counts over the years so good to see so many your way. 😘

There have been a lot of bird sightings in recent years at this Park Pam. On Friday morning, 32 Canada Geese were grazing and ran over when I fed the birds. They ate their food and came after me (my bag, which they are smart and knows contains more food). [I am sorry for the late response – my internet went out early Thursday and was not back until this morning due to a big ice storm.]

Thanks Pam. I hope this is it for Winter, but I doubt it. Your darn Pugsatawny Phil! 🙂

And it’s been so unsettlingly warm here that I worry for the kids/planet’s future.

Yes, worrisome all around Pam. This weather is so erratic and a climatologist was on my radio station last week and said we should know that frequent ice storms will be the norm now as we do not cool down as we once did in Winter. Ice shanties had to be removed from many Michigan lakes downstate as we only had one time that lakes froze over – we’ve had several ice rescues from people thinking the ice was more solid than it was.
There are new worries for Michigan which has dealt with an errant balloon, a college school shooting, an ice storm and now hazardous materials from the East Palestine site have been hauled into Michigan that has one of three designated toxic waste sites in the U.S., but no one was advised it was coming first. They have stopped further delivery but still …. I won’t be going to any of the Metroparks in the Belleville area. There was a protest by people about it earlier today.

What!……No Baldies?

No, unfortunately Wayne I did not. Not even a hawk at this venue. But Sunday morning, before I went to Council Point Park, I went down to the River – it’s just about 1 1/2 miles away from Council Point Park. I parked, ran over to the edge of the pavilion and saw NOTHING. A handful of fisherman, but no birds. Not a single eagle – I’m guessing they don’t come to fish anymore since the steel plant shut down. The steam from the molten steel would warm the water and break up the ice. But I never saw a single duck, goose or swan there either – very unusual. So I went to my favorite spot and had a good showing: 59 individual birds.

So you are saying the river was completely covered over with ice? No breaks anywhere?
LikeLiked by 1 person
No, actually I was surprised there was no ice as it had been very cold the two days before, but there was a very swift current, but not even any ice floes. My next Monday post will be the Detroit River when it was really brutally cold and lots of ice floes.

Thanks Laurie – lots of birds showed up on Sunday morning, probably since it was a bit milder and th sun was out. The following day I saw several Red-winged Blackbirds – think Spring! We have an ice storm right now, so we’re more in Winter mode today and tomorrow.

I am in Hawaii right now, Linda. Seeing a lot of new birds!!! I AM thinking of spring with the red-winged blackbirds sightings. It will be here soon!

How exciting Laurie! Such nice warmth, beautiful scenery and birds who aren’t breathing out wisps of cold air! I’ve never been to Hawaii. A friend of mine just told me he and his wife are going to Hawaii next month to celebrate his 70th birthday and he has signed up for multiple 5K runs this year, plays pickleball three times a week and is on a traveling tennis team. He, like you and Bill, is loving retirement and staying young at the same time. Meanwhile, we have an ice storm, part of Winter Storm Olive that you are missing. 🙂 I am counting the days. Enjoy yourselves!

I am falling asleep listening to the tree frogs chirping. So nice to hear them again after almost a year. Hoping I can hear them again when I get home. Thanks, Linda.

I’m looking forward to seeing them this year Laurie – last year I only heard them in a ditch and somewhere else where rain had accumulated. Hope you are still enjoying your beautiful getaway!

You saw a lot of species of birds – that is great. I doubt if I could list 12 = probably more like 7 or 8.

I lucked out that morning Peggy … it was sunny and it was much warmer than the day before. I originally went to the River, about 1 1/2 miles away from my usual park, thinking I could get some swans, geese, ducks and maybe an eagle, but no waterfowl, not even seagulls. You have foxes and raccoons. 🙂

I don’t know what to think Joni – I see your other message that it was in Reader. It was not in my Reader and when I reblogged it to send it to Reader, it didn’t go then either. I hated to post twice – probably should have just deleted the first one. It has still not shown up in Reader as of now, yet, if I click on the name of this post while I am in Comments, I am directed to Reader – strange. That was my annoyance early this morning and I only went there as I went online to see the weather, when ice/sleet/snow was starting as I wanted to run the car and put something in the crockpot, plus check on a friend who had surgery yesterday. As the day wore on, the weather started taking precedence … I hope the worst is over. It is plain rain now and according to Wunderground Weather which has a satellite near me, it is 33F and a real feel of 25F … the winds have finally died down, just 8 mph. I won’t rest easy until tomorrow. Lots of downed wires and wires and trees on fire when I just looked on the Facebook neighborhood forum.

I love woodpeckers, we always have a couple hanging around our feeders and we bought a special feeder for woodpeckers. They are so cute

I love them too Susan. I put Woodpecker suet balls and some Woodpecker suet at the Park. I bought a suet holder and hung it in the tree and secured it with a chain. Someone took the chain and threw the feeder on the ground, so I just scatter the food now. I’ve seen the special Woodpecker feeders with the flat board for their tails so they can get close up and brace themselves the feeder to eat more easily.

Our backyard is full today because of the storm that went through last night. They are all very hungry !

I feel so badly for the birds in this weather Susan. Many people are not putting feeders in their backyard due to worries about the bird flu. We suddenly have tons of Canada Geese at the Park and they are eating what I put out for the birds and squirrels. The grass is getting green so no problems for them finding food to eat.

I love the way they land on our feeder, hanging off the edge. They are so much fun to watch but they grab a seed and fly away immediately.

On the outside fringe of this park, a homeowner put a feeding station for the birds – he has a suet holder, a birdseed feeder and a big tub of corn for the geese. In the Summer months, he fills the tub with water for the geese. It is too far from the Creek for the ducks to go. There is only one Red-bellied Woodpecker I see at this Park and I see him at that suet sometimes. The geese were stealing the squirrels and birds’ peanuts and seeds Friday and it did not go over very well. 🙂

Thanks Terri. It was a good birding day, likely because it was fairly mild and the sun was out. I don’t know what is going on with WP … I hated reblogging that post but I found out this afternoon, that even just clicking the icon to my actual blog site, I have to actually log on and it asks me to follow it. I’m wondering if Firefox did an upgrade of some type or it is just buggy things going on with WP.

In my case, I added the Jetpack mobile app last Monday. I get zero notifications about links, unless the link is pasted in a comment. I’ve since made some adjustments for Comments, so we’ll see. Jetpack actually makes it easier to read posts and respond on my phone. I kept getting asked to log in every time using my phone with the former WordPress mobile app.

So maybe it was not a Firefox issue after all. I was recommended to use Firefox by WP several years ago. My posts would appear, then disappear in Reader and images on older posts would appear ghosted. I would send someone a link to a prior post, only to find photos missing. WP never could not determine the problem.

WordPress has had its share of glitches over the years. I imagine a lot of folks will be chatting on WP help this week. I don’t have Firefox, just use chrome and windows but still have a few minor issues besides the Jetpack app–which I believe is the culprit.

I had the same issues in Chrome and I have Opera browser installed as well and it was problematic. Hopefully we all resolve our issues soon.

I’m thinking of changing my WordPress theme. I’m told the classic themes are slowly being discontinued, and that makes me wonder if that could be part of the link issues. I’m going to email Hugh Roberts–he seems to be in the know about these things 🙂

Then I am wondering the same for me with my 2010 theme … I have picked Hugh’s brain on many an occasion, then if he doesn’t know, I pass along the Happiness Engineer’s recommendations for Hugh’s info or if he wants to write a post about the problem. Going to my actual blog site is like I am a visitor as I can’t click under the “Notifications area” it just has the circle going around, but if I go to “My Site” I can look at Notifications, but nothing in Reader. I’d rather they skipped the A-I stuff and kept the main parts of WP working properly. It’s all too much sometimes!

Okay, Linda, for the first photo I assumed you climbed an adjacent tree, inching slowly upward like a lumberjack, until you were perched a hundred feet off the ground, balancing your camera just so to get this perfect close-up of your woodpecker friend while he froze against his own tree. Before you say, “Actually Dave, it went like this…”, you might just let me believe my own version of the story instead. Man, you’re quite the thrillseeker 🙂
LikeLiked by 1 person
You may think that if you wish Dave. 🙂 I kinda like thinking of myself as a thrill seeker. The Red-bellied Woodpecker is the one I have to shimmy up the dead tree to get up close, but this Downy Woodpecker stays closer to the ground. I was lucky as it was right around chest level with me and posed nicely (despite having no treats), just munching grubs. [I am sorry for the late response – my internet went out early Thursday and was not back until this morning due to a big ice storm.]

Great pictures! What a handsome woodpecker. You did well counting the birds. You do have a lot of juncos — I haven’t seen even one this year.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Thanks Barbara! Those Downies are cute. They inch around the tree so fast sometimes that I’ll have the camera ready and it has disappeared to the other side. But then it keeps circling around, so I catch it the next time. I was fairly close to it as it was feasting on grubs. Those Juncos are amazing how they hang out together. On this Winter day, they were clustered in a tree, all flew down together, then after grabbing a seed, they went back to the same tree. I think they are pretty and it’s only recently they’ve come to this Park.

I occasionally hear woodpeckers in my neighborhood but I have never seen one up close like this.

We have a few in the neighborhood and at the Park too JP, mostly the larger, Red-bellied Woodpeckers and they can really decimate the trees and telephone poles as they hammer incessantly! This little woodpecker was very cute – sat and posed, didn’t fly away. [You’re really catching up; I was 18 days behind as of last Saturday … still one week behind.]
