About Linda Schaub

This is my first blog and I enjoy writing each and every post immensely. I started a walking regimen in 2011 and decided to create a blog as a means of memorializing the people, places and things I see on my daily walks. I have always enjoyed people watching, and so my blog is peppered with folks I meet, or reflections of characters I have known through the years. Often something piques my interest, or evokes a pleasant memory from my memory bank, so this becomes a “slice o’ life” blog post that day. I respect and appreciate nature and my interaction with Mother Nature’s gifts is also a common theme. Sometimes the most-ordinary items become fodder for points to ponder over and touch upon. My career has been in the legal field and I have been a legal secretary for four decades, primarily working in downtown Detroit, and now working from my home. I graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in print journalism in 1978, though I’ve never worked in that field. I like to think this blog is the writer in me finally emerging!! Walking and writing have met and shaken hands and the creative juices are flowing once again in Walkin’, Writin’, Wit & Whimsy – hope you think so too. - Linda Schaub

Great shots of this bird. I once put a seagull standing on one leg in a post. In her comment one lady had so much sympathy for the bird that lost one of its legs.

Thanks Peggy. It is pretty amazing how seagulls tuck the entire leg and foot (and their webbed feet are so wide) into their feathers and you can’t see them, so I can see the lady feeling badly for the bird losing one of its legs. I follow the Michigan Duck Rescue & Sanctuary on Facebook. A group of volunteers go out and rescue waterfowl all over the state. Yesterday they wrote about a goose that got fishing wire wrapped around both feet and it had already lost one foot but they were able to save the other foot. No licensed rehabbers would take the goose due to the avian flu.

Yes, I follow Nottingham Nature Center on Facebook. It is not near me, but Cheryl rehabs a lot of animals at her place, some deer as well. There was a story on the news how a deer was spotted near the Center over the last few weeks and it had a plastic pumpkin kids use for collecting candy stuck on its head/snout up to its eyes. It had not eaten in all that time and volunteers managed to get a net over the deer and remove the deer which bolted and took off – they named it “Lucky”.

Yes, you’d better have been detail oriented in your job Joni! I heard on the business news this morning that CVS and Walgreens, our biggest drugstores over here, will be having less hours at their respective pharmacies as they are finding it difficult to stay fully staffed at their current available hours.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Joni says:

Yes, I’ve read the same type of articles. In Maine/Vermont? one of the big chains got charged because some of the pharmacies had been closed for days, and people couldn’t get their meds. For most of my career, we were in short supply, but now the technicians are too. We never had enough support staff on. Glad I’m done with it all….but I always had razor straight concentration at blocking out noise and zeroing in on what was in front of me. One of my techs said I had eyes in the back of my head as nothing got past me!

I have heard the story both on the national news and local news – both said CVS and the national news said Walgreens, local news said Walmart – maybe just an error as they sound similar. I wonder if the problem is they give immunizations now – years ago if you wanted a flu shot, you went to the doctor. I remember my mom and I going to Kroger grocery store for our annual flu shot, which we liked as it was walk-ins and we did it on our own schedule, plus did a little grocery shopping while we were there. We even got pneumonia shots there years ago, then the pharmacies got on the bandwagon. We thought that was radical at the time – no need to make a doctor’s appointment to get a flu shot. Now I heard a story on the business news report that Amazon will be filling prescriptions at a much-lower price and free delivery for Amazon Prime members. This does not apply to Medicare prescriptions. It is good you could block out noise and distraction Joni. That is how accidents happen and they could be deadly.

      • Joni says:

I think the Amazon thing is just for a limited number/type (40 or 50 ?) of drugs and not for everything, so it would be a pain to get some drugs there and some at a regular pharmacy, and who would check for the drug interactions if neither have a complete list? Plus not for drug plans or Medicare so I don’t think it will go over big.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Linda Schaub says:

I didn’t realize that it was just for 40-50 kinds of drugs. I don’t think it will be big either – would you say that the majority of people taking prescription drugs are of Medicare age – that’s 65 for us.

That’s interesting – I don’t take any prescription meds, so I didn’t even know they offered prescriptions to begin with.

I guess if you were already an Amazon Prime member, it would be good, but if not, they raised their membership fee last year. While I was over at Yahoo, was reading about Cindy Williams’ death. One by one, these television stars we knew are dying off. Earlier today it was “Wednesday” from “The Addams Family”.

I was thinking of joining Amazon Prime for the movies, but I would have to upload the program on the Smart TV and I don’t know how to do that. It’s on older tv as there’s no Prime Video icon/program built in. But I thought it was $99 a year, didn’t know it had gone up to $139? I never order from Amazon – the only thing we got was a digital clock for mom and my brother ordered it under his name. Amazon Canada is not as good as the US, same with Netflix.

I have not ordered anything in awhile – got the stool and plaster stuff to fix the crack, the roof rake – things to fix the wind damage. They raised the Prime membership $20.00 last year to $139.00 and raised it from $99.00 to $119.00 a couple of years before that. I’ve only had it since the pandemic, so I could get things delivered for free and not have to go to the store. I know you said you have a laptop – you could stream movies on it, or hook it up to a monitor. Not sure how you do it, but I know there are directions on YouTube. I bought a monitor to hook to an old VCR so my mom and I could watch shows I taped. The VCR did not record anymore, but played back fine. It was just plugging it into one another. If you got the monitor and the Amazon Prime, you both could watch the shows.

My laptop is tiny – only 13 inches, so I think if I go for Prime Video I would try and figure out how to download the Prime Video app onto the smart tv. My brother did the Netflix one shortly after we got the internet here at mom’s but I remember him saying it took him two hours to figure it out, as some of the Screen is in Japanese (it’s a Samsung). I’m sure I could get the guy from the TV place to come out for a fee – they do make housecalls for set up. They never reopened their TV store, after the pandemic, just online sales and delivery and set-up, but I’ve talked to him on the phone if I’ve had a problem, such as reloading Netflix if the hydro goes out. He’s a nice guy, so I’ll see what they charge. I’m not sure my mom’s eyesight is good enough for a monitor even a big one. The Smart TV is 55 inches. If the movie isn’t good, she usually falls asleep during it anyway, although I noticed she stayed awake during ACG&S the other night.
We watched Knives Out, an Agatha-Christie like murder mystery last week – I noticed the sequel Glass Onion is out on Netflix now. It was okay, lots of stars, but long, well over 2 1/2 hrs. You really had to pay attention to the many characters to follow the plot. Mom has her shows that she likes – Murder She Wrote, Columbo, Vision TV, Hit Parade etc and she loves the news on CNN, although I sometimes have to ignore it – I couldn’t watch the video of that young man the cops beat to death – had to leave the room every time they showed it and showed it and showed it.

That is a big TV – mine is 19 inches and from 1989 or 1990 and could not be hooked up to anything anymore I would think – we had the outside antennae taken down years ago. I remember you said it was a smaller screen. My mom always watched Columbo and we watched Murder She Wrote. We didn’t get CNN news I don’t think when we had cable. I cancelled the cable after my mom passed away (which was 13 years ago today). I saw the video once on Twitter – once was too much. It was the long video and I won’t watch it again. I never saw the George Floyd video until months later. Tyre Nichols was a good photographer and had just taken a photo of a sunset not long before this happened.

Her Smart TV is from 2015 and already out of date, as it was one of the first Smart TV’s. The remote has a Netflix button on it, but no other programs, except Youtube and I think you can load Facebook and photos to it but I don’t know how, and I’m hardly on Facebook anyway. We watched that Debbie Travis in Italy – six episode series on the TV through Youtube and it was okay, but some of the quality is not good depending on who uploaded them, for example old tv shows like Andy Griffith, or Moonlighting etc. Do you think you would get a new TV and cable when you retire? I do like the big screen, and I only had a small tv before, which I had inherited from my grandmother. If you bundled your TV to Comcast would it cost much more? We bundle landline phone/cable TV/internet and it’s about $180/month or $60 for each service, which is enough. When they increase it I just call and bargain for a new rate. I hate all this streaming stuff – I wish it would go back to everything all in one place. I think there are new devices that will do that. I pay $18/month for Netflix but most of the movies I want to watch are scattered all over, some on Prime, some on Peacock, one TV series that Ally recommended was only on Hulu which isn’t even available here in Canada. So I end up ordered movie DVD’s from the library, as we have a Blu-Ray player, which we bought the same time as the Smart tV.

I have a DVD/VCR combo that I bought about 20 years ago. The VCR broke (it played back fine, but there was no audio when it recorded) and the salesman at Best Buy said VCRs were phasing out, so I should get this combo machine as I said I had taped a lot of movies that are downstairs (they are still downstairs – about three shelves in a cupboard of VCR taped movies). The TV might still work but I’ve not turned it on for so long, maybe not. The DVD/VCR player is inside a piece of furniture – a small cupboard and the TV sits there and we drilled holes in the back of the furniture for the cords. I never used the DVD player to record shows and I think there are just a handful of movies rented at Blockbuster that were on DVD at the time.

I was on Twitter recently and saw a video of a guy who had created icons on his mother’s Smart TV screen for all the streaming services she had and she just had to click on the app to start it – I assume a remote; maybe her phone? I may get a TV when retired, but it might be worth it to just stream them on the Windows 10 laptop, except easier to see on the bigger screen. Comcast kept calling me all the time to bundle – I told them I wanted to keep AT&T for now as I needed it and the speakerphone for work and when the internet goes out, so does the phone system (that is what happens at work as we have Comcast and Marge had the bundle of phone/cable/internet). I should ask them why they raised it again after raising it last year already. I have a library card and will look into that as well as books again once I’m retired. I am behind in everything – four or five days behind in Reader, never even made it to Comments last night and behind in my book. That was because I spent so much time decluttering the kitchen on Sunday. Had to fix something on the car – got a new trickle charger and ordered it from Amazon yesterday morning, delivered it later that day and I went out and put it on after work. The other one had frayed wires and I was worried about sparks/fire. By the time I got dressed to go out, fiddled with it and got back in, ate dinner, it was already late. I have to do better tonight.

Yes the Smart TV has icons on it for Netflix, (and I suppose the new ones have Prime icons and whatever you sign up to stream) There is also a Netflix button on the remote. You use the buttons on the remote to navigate around the screen. I don’t find it hard to navigate it. I’m used to using the Blueray DVD player too, as we get the DVD’s from the library. I even ordered A Man Called Otto – the new movie with Tom Hanks, as I saw the Swedish movie version and read the book. I think you should get a new tV – even a 42 inch would be nice if you don’t have the room for a bigger one. If you order it from a shop that will do delivery and set-up that helped us out a lot. I’m a bit behind in Reader too, but am too tired tonight to read.

I thought it was interesting seeing how the icons on the screen worked. The guy was giving a tutorial to his mother on how to use the icons, which he referred to as “squares” in the video. I don’t know if my DVD player has Blueray or not. I have not been to the show since 1992 – saw a good movie with Jody Foster and Richard Gere in “Sommersby”. I have seen some reviews about “A Man Called Otto” and it looks good. I didn’t know it was a book as well. I wonder if Best Buy still uses Geek Squad for electronics set-up. I used them to set up my wireless back in 2009 when I got the first laptop. It is not a big room, but is cozier than the living room, which is not cozy at all – furniture is hard, even the rocking chair with the velvet tufted cushion – more for show than comfort. The den is hygge. 🙂 I never made it to Reader last night and I am six days behind and hate that.

You are observant JP as not everyone saw that word in the picture and it left them wondering why I put a Muhammad Ali quote in the headline. I think birds get tired of standing on both feet? My parakeet and canaries used to sleep like that with their head under their wing – I’d probably topple to the ground if I tried either of those tricks. [I am sorry for the late response – my internet went out early Thursday and was not back until this morning due to a big ice storm.]
